Abstract: The invention relates to expandable olefin bead polymers which comprise a blowing agent with a boiling point of from -5 to 150° C., selected from the group consisting of alkanes, alkanols, ketones, ethers and esters. The particles are unfoamed and have a bulk density above 500 g/l, and can be foamed to a bulk density below 200 g/l after storage for one hour at room temperature in free contact with the atmosphere. They are prepared by impregnating polyolefin pellets in suspension in a pressure vessel with the blowing agent, cooling the batch below 100° C., reducing the pressure and isolating the particles.

Abstract: A particulate expandable olefin polymerizate, comprises non-foamed particles having a bulk density of more than 400 g/liter, which can be lowered to 200 g/liter after foaming for 30 minutes at room temperature in a free atmosphere followed by heating to a temperature exceeding 100 deg C. The particulate can be mixed with up to 50 wt.% of a thermoplastic of glass transition temperature below 180 deg C, and 1-40 wt.% of an organic propellant of boiling point -5 to 150 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the polymerizate by impregnation of a polyolefin granulate with 2-50 wt.% of an organic propellant of boiling point -5 to 150 deg C suspension in a pressurized container at increased temperature, followed by expansion, separation and washing of the impregnated granulate, with cooling to below 100 deg C before expansion.
