Abstract: Prepn. of 1-chloro-4-phenyl-butanes of formula (I) comprises hydrogenation of a substd. omega-chloro-butanone of formula (II), in the presence of a catalyst which is a transition metal coated on a solid carrier with a specific surface ore of 400 m2/g. In the formulae X is F and/or Cl; n is 1, 2 or 3; and Y is H or OH. Also claimed is a process for prepn. of tetrahydrofurans of formula (III) by hydrogenation of (II) in the presence of a base and a transition metal catalyst. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) and (III) are useful intermediates for organic syntheses, esp. for prodn. of plant protectants. These one-stage processes give better yeilds, and are quicker and easier, than prior art processes. The catalysts are easy to handle.
