    Abstract: Goniochromatic lustrous pigments (G) based on metallic diskette substrates are coated with: (A) (hydrated) silica and/or (hydrated) alumina layer; (B) aluminium metallic layer allowing at least some visible light to pass through it; and (C) opt. outer layer of colourless or selectively absorbent metal oxide and/or one contg. phosphate, chromate and/or vanadate. Also claimed are the following : (i) lustrous pigment mixts. comprising (G) and silicate diskettes coated with a colourless or selectively absorbent metal oxide layer (A`), metallic aluminium layer (B`) through which visible light can pass and opt. outer layer (C`) of colourless or selectively absorbent metal oxide and/or one contg. phosphate, chromate and/or vanadate; (ii) prepn. of (G); and (iii) prepn. of aluminium-coated pigment diskettes by reacting volatile gaseous alkyl aluminium cpds. or aluminium hydride trialkylamine adducts in an inert atmos. in the presence of the diskettes. (C) contains (hydrated) SiO2, (hydrated) Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, Fe2O3 and / or Cr2O3. The substrates are coated only with (A) and (B). The metallic substrates comprise Al and are made by standard extrusion and grinding techniques. They may be coated with a ferromagnetic layer and/or passivated. AlH3 tri(1-4C alkyl)amine adducts or alkyl aluminium cpds. of the following formula are used to make Al-coated pigment plates: R aAlXb, where R = 1-4C alkyl, X = H or halogen; a = 1-3, and b = 0 - 2.
