Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a goniochromatic luster pigment having advantageous coating properties by selecting a pigment based on multiply coated iron oxide platelets each comprising a packet of two colorless coated layers having specified refracting indices. SOLUTION: This pigment is based on multiply coated iron oxide platelets each comprising at least one packet comprising a colorless coating (A) having a refractive index n =2.0 and is obtained by forming coatings A and B on iron oxide platelets by a wet chemical process comprising the independent hydrolysis of organic or inorganic metal compounds or by the gas phase decomposition of volatile organic or inorganic metal compounds. It is desirable that the iron oxide platelets are platelet-like α-iron (III) oxide or magnetite optionally doped with silicon, aluminum and/or manganese. Coating A is made from a lowly refractive colorless substance applicable to iron oxide platelets in the form of a durable coating and is desirably silicon oxide (hydrate). Coating B is made from a highly refractive colorless substance applicable to coating A in the form of a durable coating and is desirably titanium dioxide, titanium oxide hydrate, or the like.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject pigment having good application characteristics and expanded colorability range and useful for the coloring of an ink, etc., including coating and printing ink by including a packet heated in a reducing atmosphere and having low refractive and high refractive colorless coatings formed on a specific base. SOLUTION: (A) A silicate platelet coated with titanium dioxide is used as a base and preferably heated in a reducing atmosphere such as ammonia gas to form at least one, preferably only one packet layer having (B) a colorless coating having a refractive index (n) of =2.0 preferably by wet chemical method, etc. The component B is preferably composed principally of silicon oxide, hydrated silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, etc. The component C preferably has an optical thickness of

Abstract:
The invention relates to a multilayer cholesteric pigment in platelet form, characterized by a succession of the layers A/B/ and possibly C, where A and C independently of each other represent at least one absorption layer which is partly transparent to light and B represents at least one cholesteric layer.
