    Abstract: Homopolymers of propylene and copolymers of propylene with minor amts. of other 2-12C alpha-monolefins are made by polymerisation of the monomer(s) at 20-160 deg.C and a press. of 1-100 bar using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system comprising (1) a Ti component based on a finely divided silica gel carrier and contg. Ti, Mg, Cl and a benzenecarboxylic acid deriv., (2) an Al component of formula AlR3 in which R=1-8C alkyl and (3) a silane component of formula R1nSi(OR2)4-n in which R1=a satd. aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon residue with not more than 16C, R2=1-15C alkyl and n=0-3, with an atomic ratio of T in (1):Al in (2)=1:10 to 1:800 and a mol. ratio Al component (2):silane component (3)=1:0.01-1.08.

    Abstract: Catalyst systems of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst type, containing, as active constituents, a) a titanium-containing solid component which contains titanium, magnesium, halogen and a carboxylic acid ester, and, as cocatalyst, b) an aluminium compound and c) optionally further electron-donor compounds, characterised in that they contain, as the carboxylic acid ester in the solid component a), an ester of a benzophenone-2-carboxylic acid of the formula I in which R is a hydrogen atom, a C1-C15-alkyl group or a halogen atom. These catalyst systems are particularly suitable for the preparation of polypropylene and copolymers of propylene with minor amounts of other alpha , beta -unsaturated olefinic compounds having 2 to 12 carbon atoms.
