Abstract: Zr-doped pseudobohemite (I) contains 0.5-10mole-% Zr w.r.t. Al, 20-35% water and less than 0.5% total anionic impurities. Zr-doped gamma-A1203 (II) contains 0.5-10 mole-% Zr w.r.t. Al, 10% water and has a phase stability up to 1050 deg.C and BET surface area of 145-225+/-25m2/g. A calculated amt. of a Zr salt is added to an aq. Al sulphate soln. (III) and the mixt. and a Na aluminate soln. (IV) are dosed simultaneously into water at 50-100 deg.C and pH 3.5-8 ppte. Zr-doped A1203 gel. The suspension is adjusted to pH 8.5-10.5 by adding more (IV) and opt. conditioned for up to 24h at pH 8.5-10-.5 and 50-100deg.C then the (I) formed is filtered off and the filtered cake is washed with water. Alternatively, the Zr salt is dissolved in water and this soln. (III) and (IV) are dosed into water simultaneously. The washed filter cake pref. is redispersed in water and the suspension is spray dried. (II) is produced by calcining (I) at 700-1100, pref. 850 950 deg.C.

Abstract: Aluminium oxide which is amorphous according to X-ray diffraction, has an extremely high water content and has a specific surface area (BET) in accordance with DIN 66 131 of > 10 m /g, a mean particle size of >/= 0.1 mu m and a water content of > 10% gives, through calcination, an aluminium oxide which comprises >/= 90% by weight of alpha -aluminium oxide and has a specific surface area (BET) in accordance with DIN 66 131 of > 5 m /g and a mean particle size of >/= 0.1 mu m. … The aluminium oxide which is amorphous according to X-ray diffraction can be prepared by reacting steam and vapour-form aluminium trichloride in a molar ratio of 1.5 to 10:1, preferably 7 +/- 1 : 1 = H2O : AlCl3 at a temperature of 200 to 1000 DEG C, preferably 600 +/- 50 DEG C, and at a resonance time of > 1 second, preferably 3.5 +/- 1 second, and at a pressure of 100 +/- 10 mm water column.
