Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To product a silicic acid modified to silane and reducing viscosity. SOLUTION: Water or a dilute acid is first sprayed on silicic acid in a proper mixing vessel if necessary and then a surface modifying reactive agent or a mixture of several kinds of surface modifying reactive agents is sprayed. Abstract: Granulates (I) based on pyrogenic silica are claimed, with the following physical properties: - mean particle dia.: 10-120 microns - BET surface: 40-400 m /g - pore vol.: 0.5-2.5 ml/g - pore size distribution: less than 5% of total pore vol. with a pore dia. less than 5 nm, the rest meso- and macro-pores -pH: 3.6-8.5 - tamped density: 220-700 g/l. Also claimed is the prodn. of (I) by dispersing pyrogenic silica in water and spray drying the dispersion. The granules obtd. are then (a) heated for 1-8 hrs. at 150-1100 deg.C; or (b) silanised; or (c) heat-treated as in (a) and then silanised.

Abstract: A method of producing precious metal (esp. Pd, Ag or Pd-Ag alloy) powders involves feeding an aerosol of a precious metal cpd. soln. into a flame reactor at above the decomposition temp. of the precious metal cpd. or oxide and depositing the resulting precious metal powder. The novelty is that, prior to feeding into the reactor, the aerosol is freed from (most of) the solvent at above the solvent boiling point, pref. by heat treatment at 10-100 deg C above the solvent boiling point for 2-20 secs. immediately before feeding into the reactor.

Abstract: Titanium dioxide powder containing iron oxide is prepared by a pyrogenic, in particular a flame-hydrolytic, route from FeCl3 and TiCl4. A further possibility is the coating of pyrogenic titanium dioxide, in particular prepared by flame hydrolysis, with iron oxide in aqueous dispersion. The titanium dioxide containing iron oxide is used as a UV absorber in sun protection compositions.
