    Abstract: A polyoxymethylene of high molecular weight is prepared by polymerizing trioxane by bulk polymerization in the absence of an inert solvent and in the presence of a cationic catalyst. Specified catalysts are borontrifluoride, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride, methyl aluminium dichloride, methyl tin trichloride, an organo-aluminium or organo-tin compound in combination with an alpha-halogenated ether, saline compounds of halides of boron, iron, tin and antimony (but not antimony fluoride) where an aryldiazonium-fluoroborate is the preferred saline compound, an aryldiazonium salts. The catalyst may be diluted with an inert medium.

    Abstract: A trioxane graft polymer is prepared by polymerizing trioxane in the presence of a Lewis acid and at least one primary polymer selected from the group consisting of polyethers, polyether acetals and polyacetals. The polymerization may be effected by adding the trioxane to a mixture of a polymer and Lewis acid, or by adding the acid to a mixture of trioxane and polymer or by mixing the trioxane and polymer, cooling this mixture to below its melting-point contacting with boron trifluoride gas and polymerizing at above the melting-point of trioxane. The Lewis acid may be BF3, BCl3, AlCl3, FeCl3, SbCl3, SbCl5, ZnCl2, SnCl4, TiCl4, the reaction product of borontrifluoride with dimethyl ether, methylethylether, diethyl-ether, di-isoamyl ether, tetrahydrofuran or tetrahydropyrene, an oxon-ium salt of boron trifluoride, a substituted diazonium salt containing the BF4-, ClO4- or PF6-anion which is either light active or thermoactive.
