Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the dispersibility of an aq. gypsum slurry and the stability of the foam by using a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing two kinds of specified monomers as the essential component. CONSTITUTION: 0.01-200mol% monomer shown by formula I (R1 and R2 are H or methyl, m1 is 0 to 2, AO is a 2-3C oxyalkylene, (n) is 2 to 300, and X is H or 1-3C alkyl), 100mol% >=1 kind of monomer selected from the compds. shown by formula II and III (R3 to R5 are H, methyl or (CH2 )m2 COOM2 , R6 is H or methyl, M1 , M2 and Y are H, alkali (earth) metal, alkylammonium or substituted alkylammonium, and m2 is 0 to 2) are polymerized in an aq. solvent in the presence of a polymerization initiator to obtain a dispersant for an aq. gypsum slurry consisting of a copolymer having 1,000-500,000 weight average mol.wt. (by gel permeation chromatography expressed in terms of polystyrene sodium sulfonate). This dispersant is added by 0.01-10wt.% as a solid content to gypsum.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition containing a specified weight ratio of a ketene dimer-based sizing agent and a water soluble polymer compound and capable of reducing stains of a paper-making apparatus and improving the work efficiency. CONSTITUTION:This surface sizing agent composition for paper making in a hot water sizing system is obtained by blending (A) a ketene dimer sizing agent containing a ketene dimer represented by the formula (R1 and R2 are each a 8 to 24C alkyl, an alkenyl or an aryl) with (B) a water soluble polymer (e.g. selected from anionic-, cationic-, amphoteric- and nonionic-polymer compounds) in a weight ratio of (A)/(B) of 99.9/0.1 to 0.1/99.9. This sizing agent exhibits excellent sizing properties if applied to paper (e.g. gravure base paper) not requiring application of oxidized starch for improvement of strength of the paper surface or to paperboard.

CONSTITUTION:The objective treating agent having the above-mentioned advantages comprises a cationic aqueous emulsion prepared by incorporating (A) 0.01-9wt.% of a cationic polymer such as cationic starch, cationic cellulose or cationic vinyl polymer in copolymerization or after copolymerization of (B) 20-60wt.% of a vinyl monomer component consisting of a mixture of a lower fatty acid vinyl ester (e.g. vinyl acetate) and another monomer copolymerizable therewith (e.g. methyl methacrylate) with (C) 0.1-15 pts.wt., based on 100 pts.wt. of the component B, of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid or cinnamic acid.
