Abstract: A receiving method and apparatus for increasing coherent integration length while receiving a positioning signal from transmitters such as GPS satellites. In order to compensate for frequency drifts that may occur in the positioning signal, a hypothesis is made as to the frequency drift, which is inserted into the receiving algorithm. Advantageously, the length of coherent integration can be increased at the expense of reducing the length of incoherent integration while keeping the total integration length the same, the net effect of which is an increase in signal detection sensitivity. The frequency drift hypothesis has any appropriate waveform; for example, approximately linear or exponential. The hypothesized frequency drift can be inserted into the receiver algorithm in any suitable place; for example, the data block may be adjusted for the hypothesized frequency drift, alternatively the reference signal may be adjusted, or the frequency samples of either the data block or the reference signal may be adjusted.

The position determination system includes a position determination entity (PDE) that is connected to the base stations and serves as a processing server for computing the position of the wireless devices. In addition, the system and method ensure that the wireless device is not loaded with additional capacity, and that the wireless device is provided with precise location information. Abstract: Apparatus and methods of implementing code space search of received signals are described herein. A code space search is implemented as a searcher (220) that perform a subtask that is dynamically reconf igurable at each boundary of an initial integration time. Each particular subtask sets forth a programmabl configuration of coherent integration hypothesis that are performed during th initial integration time. The searcher stores the results of the coherent integration hypothesis in a first portion of memory. A search accelerator (250) operates on the initial integration results. The search accelerator can perform coherent integration of various frequency bins of different timing hypothesis, can generate energy values of the coherent integration results, and can generate a non-coherent energy summation. The energy values of the coherent integrations and non-coherent energy summations are stored in a second portion of memory. The ability to reconfigure the subtasks and accelerator operation provides flexibility in search space dimensions.

Abstract: Techniques to detect whether or not a remote terminal is under the coverage of a repeater within a wireless communication network, which may be based on (1) a list of base stations expected to be received while under the repeater's coverage, (2) the characterized environment of the repeater, and/or (3) the propagation delays for a transmission received at the remote terminal. Additional ambiguity resulting from being under a repeater's coverage may also be accounted for and/or compensated by (1) discarding time measurements from repeated base stations, (2) adjusting the processing for position estimation to account for the additional ambiguity due to the repeater, (3) computing a series of position estimates based on multiple transmissions received from the same originating base station and selecting the best estimate, and/or (4) computing a series of position estimates based on multiple transmissions from multiple originating base stations and selecting the best estimate.

Abstract: Position determination accuracy of a wireless communication device may be negatively affected by a large unaccounted GPS doppler bias, which in turn may affect GPS doppler estimations and GPS doppler measurements conducted by the wireless communication device. The quality of GPS doppler measurements is very important for position location, because poor quality GPS doppler measurements may prevent the wireless communication device from acquiring satellites in the most sensitive modes with narrow frequency ranges, which results in reduced GPS pseudorange measurement yield. Large unaccounted GPS doppler bias also adversely affects position accuracy because of the adverse effect on the GPS code phase measurements time propagation to common time prior to their use in position location calculation. The same is true in the case of unaccounted CDMA code doppler, through the adverse effect on the AFLT code phase measurements time propagation to common time prior to their use in a position location engine. This effect is the biggest concern in the case of large search windows. Therefore, the present disclosure provides a method of optimizing GPS based position location in the presence of time-varying frequency error, including the steps of continuously measuring and/or calculating resulting GPS doppler bias and CDMA code doppler bias and then minimizing their adverse effects with regard to position location determination by re-centering GPS doppler search windows based on the GPS doppler bias value, as well as using GPS doppler bias and CDMA code doppler bias value to properly propagate GPS pseudorange and AFLT pilot phase measurements, respectively, to common time prior to their use in a position location engine.

Abstract: The frequency error of an oscillator is minimized by characterizing the oscillator. A reference signal from an external source containing a minimal frequency error is provided to an electronic device. The external signal is used as a reference frequency to estimate the frequency error of an internal frequency source. The electronic device monitors parameters that are determined to have an effect on the frequency accuracy of the internal frequency source. Temperature is one parameter known to have an effect on the frequency of the internal frequency source. The electronic device collects and stores the values of the parameters as well as the corresponding output frequency or frequency error of the internal frequency source. The resultant characterization of the internal frequency source is used to compensate the internal frequency source when the internal frequency source is not provided the external reference signal.

Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for searching is described. This searcher combines the ability to search multiple offsets of single pilots, such as those found in the IS-95 system, with the ability to search multiple pilots, such as those found in a GPS location determination system. Both typ es of searching can be done in a single architecture combining the parallel computation features of a matched filter with the flexibility of allowing a variable number of non-coherant accumulations to be performed at high speed for a wide range of search hypotheses in a resource efficient manner. This invention allows for parallel use of the matched filter structure in a time- sliced manner to search multiple windows. In addition, the searcher allows f or optional independent Walsh decovering for each search window. The time-shari ng approach allows for optional frequency searching of any offset.
