Abstract: Techniques to send GSM CBS messages over a CDMA air interface. The encapsulation of a GSM CBS message in CDMA messages may be achieved using various schemes. An indication is provided at each of a number of pertinent layers to allow the terminals to determine whether a GSM CBS message or a CDMA broadcast SMS message was sent. These indications include (1) a value in a designated field or subfield of a Data Burst Message, (2) a new value for a Category field in a Service Category parameter of an SMS Broadcast Message, and (3) a new value for a Msg_Encoding field in a User Data subparameter of the SMS Deliver Message.

Abstract: Techniques to provide the current status of voice and data applications in wireless devices. Annunciators are provided for these applications and are displayed as appropriate to indicate their current status. Certain applications may further be associated with additional menu screens to allow the user to view additional information. In one method, the current status of a particular application supported by the wireless device is initially determined. This application may be voice call handling, data call handling, voice recognition, voice memo, answering machine, or some other application. An annunciator indicative of the current status of the application is then provided, if required. A menu screen with a listing of all items (e.g., missed calls, recorded voice memos, recorded messages, or data calls) may be displayed when requested, and additional information for a selected item may also be provided if requested. The annunciator is cleared if all items are cleared.

Abstract: Techniques for converting short messages between different formats (e.g., from GSM SMS to CDMA SMS) such that pertinent control information is retained without changing the fundamental structure of these message formats. A new value is defined for the Msg Encoding field in the User Data subparameter of the CDMA SMS message to indicate that the content of this message is an encapsulated GSM SMS message. The Message Type field in the User Data subparameter may be used to carry data coding scheme information for the encapsulated GSM SMS message. At a recipient mobile station, the value in the Msg Encoding field is checked to determine whether or not the CDMA SMS message includes an encapsulated GSM SMS message. If the answer is yes, then the user data in the CHARi fields of the CDMA SMS message is processed based on the data coding scheme information from the Message Type field.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods of differentiated data session access on a wireless communication device and dynamic source determination of provisioning information on a wireless communication device are disclosed. User Identity Modules (UIMs) are provisioned such that network-service applications resident on the wireless device are associated with a corresponding application profile within the UIM. Each networkservice application has a corresponding network address identifier defined within the user profile. The network address associated with the identifier is used to establish a data session for the corresponding network service application. By providing for application-specific network addresses, service providers and/or network operators can differentiate between what services a user is accessing during a data session. In addition, the UIMs may be provisioned with priority category identifiers that allow the associated network-service application to be prioritized for data session establishment.
