Abstract: In a communication system in which a mobile station accessing the main network via a plurality of base stations, the mobile station can freely select any of the base stations as a forward link (FL) serving station. In addition, the mobile station can also freely select another or the same base station as a reverse link (RL) serving station. The mobile station has stored in its memory a plurality of routes corresponding to the plurality of base stations, with each route dedicatedly assigned to a particular base station. During handoff of one base station to another as either the FL or the RL serving station, exchanged data packets are processed in the respective routes of the base stations involved.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for processing wireless signal components for a mobile wireless access broadband service. This can include processes for measuring signal strength of an alternative frequency by tuning away from an existing frequency associated with an existing communications path. Such processes allow determining if the alternative frequency supports a subsequent communications path in a mobile broadband wireless application. Upon the determination, the process can automatically select the subsequent communications path based in part on the measured signal strength.

Abstract: A method for implementing proxy mobile Internet protocol (PMIP) in mobile IP foreign agent care-of-address mode may include determining a home address of an access terminal. The method may also include communicating with a home agent in order to bind an address of the network node with the home address of the access terminal and establish a tunnel between the network node and the home agent. The method may also include receiving first packets destined for the access terminal from the home agent via the tunnel and sending the first packets to the access terminal. The method may also include receiving second packets sent by the access terminal that are destined for a correspondent node and sending the second packets to the home agent via the tunnel.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that fa-cilitate transmitting access point types and/or restricted association parameters using broadcast signals, such as beacons, pilot signals, etc. The type or restricted association information can be indicated by one or more intrinsic aspects of the signal, such as specified parameters. In addition, the type or information can be indicated by one or more extrinsic signal aspects, such as frequency, inter-val, periodicity, etc. Using this information, a mobile device can determine whether an access point implements restricted associa-tion. If so, the mobile device can request an access point or related group identifier before determining whether to establish connec-tion therewith. The identifier can be verified against a list of ac-cessible access points and/or groups to make the determination.

Abstract: Techniques for sending resource requests in a wireless communication system are described. Multiple types of quality of service (QoS) information may be supported for resource requests and may include QoS class and latency deadline. A terminal may have data to send on the reverse link and may determine QoS information for the data. The QoS information may include at least one QoS type, which may be dependent on a configuration selected for use to send resource requests. The terminal may also determine backlog level information indicative of the amount of data to send. The terminal may generate a resource request with the backlog level and QoS information. The resource request may include the backlog level information and QoS class information, the backlog level information and either QoS class information or latency deadline information, the backlog level information and latency deadline information, or some other combination of information.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate utilizing restriction codes in rejecting connection requests with restricted association access points to indicate a reason for the rejection. Mobile devices can maintain a list of accessible access points and/or groups of access points, which can be consulted during cell reselection to ensure unsuitable restricted association access points are not utilized in cell reselection. Based on receiving a rejection code from a restricted association access point, a mobile device can remove the access point, or a related group, from its maintained list so that subsequent reselection attempts avoid the access point and/or access points in the related group.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to management of active connections between an access terminal and access points are described. An access terminal maintains and manages active set information. The active set information identifies a set of access points with which the access terminal has an active connection. In some embodiments, the active set information includes allocated resources assigned to the access terminal corresponding to the different access points in the active set. Layer 2 Transport Tunneling is used, in various embodiments, to communicate connection request and/or connection response information, between access points. In some embodiments, the access terminal optionally assists in coordinating MAC resources allocated to the access terminal by different access points.

Abstract: Systems and methods of generating quick paging messages having nearly unique identifiers and variable capacity are described. The system generates a quick paging message identifying an access terminal to indicate the presence of a scheduled paging message for that access terminal. The system generates a quick paging notification for each access terminal having a scheduled paging message and generates a compressed nearly unique identifier of each access terminal that is notified in the quick paging message. The compression technique can vary based on the number of bits allocated to the quick paging message as well as the number of access terminals notified in one quick paging message.

Abstract: Local breakout is provided by one or more nodes (e.g., a local access point and/or a local gateway) in a wireless network to facilitate access to one or more local services. In conjunction with local breakout, multiple IP points of presence relating to different levels of service may be provided for an access point. For example, one point of presence may relate to a local service while another point of presence may relate to a core network service. IP point of presence may be identified for an over-the-air packet to indicate a termination point for the packet. Also, different mobility management functionality may be provided at different nodes in a system whereby mobility management for a given node may be provided by a different node for different types of traffic. Thus, an access terminal may support multiple NAS instances. In addition, different types of paging may be provided for different types of traffic. Furthermore, messages associated with one protocol may be carried over another protocol to reduce complexity in the system.
