Abstract: A pix-in-pix display includes a filtering system for processing the video signals which produce the reduced-size image. The filtering system includes an anti-aliasing filter - (210) which reduces the amplitude of the components of the video signals which may cause aliasing distortion when the image is subsampled. However, the filter passes substantial amounts of these components. The filtered video signal is subsampled (212) and applied to a peaking filter (220) which amplifies the band of frequencies containing the aliasing components relative to lower frequency bands to improve the appearance of detailed portions of the reproduced image.

Abstract: In the playback of a video disc record employing an FM carrier recording format, a defect compensation system is provided which substitutes delayed video signals for current video signals when a defect is encountered. A phase locked loop including a phase detector and a voltage controlled oscillator is employed in FM detection circuits. A defect detector compares the phase between the oscillator output signal and a signal corresponding to the recovered signal. When the phase difference between these two signals exceeds a certain value, a defect signal is generated to disable the normal signal path of the recovered signal so that the delayed version of the video may be substituted for the current video for the duration of the occurrence of the defect.

Abstract: A squelch circuit responsive to a squelch signal mutes audio and video circuits in a video disc player, preconditions a video signal correction servo system to the center of its control range and inhibits a defect correction circuit. A squelch memory, set by the simultaneous occurrence of the squelch signal and a loss of carrier signal derived from the output of the player pickup transducer, maintains the muting, preconditioning and inhibiting functions. When the squelch signal terminates the squelch memory is reset upon subsequent termination of the loss of carrier signal whereby the audio and video circuits are immediately unmuted, stabilization is rapidly established by the preconditioned video signal correction servo system and the defect correction circuit is primed.

Abstract: A system for controlling the speed of a brushless DC motor includes a microprocessor for generating stator control drive signals responsive to Hall sensors detecting relative rotor-pole-stator positions. Hall sensor signal transistions are compared against a reference frequency to provide an error signal which is processed by the microprocessor in accordance with a transfer function to emulate a type II servo loop. Stator commutation control signals are reduced in duration proportional to the resulting processed error signal. The control signals are thereafter applied to integrating current drives energizing the stator coils with triangular current signals.

Abstract: In a signal expander, the envelope of an input signal (S1) to be expanded is detected (30) and applied as a control signal (S3) to the gain control input (18) of a variable gain device (14) which expands the input signal. The control signal is applied to the variable gain device via an adaptive filter (40) having improved ripple reduction and transient performance characteristics to minimize audibility of gain changes. The adaptive filter includes a low pass filter (50,52) for producing a smoothed control signal essentially free of ripple and an analog gate (70,74,78) for coupling the greater of the smoothed signal or a further signal to the variable gain device, the further signal being equal to the detector output signal less a constant. Compression of an input signal is provided by applying the input signal to the non-inverting input (110) fig 3 not shown of an amplifier (100) and feeding the (compressed) output signal (S1) of the amplifier to the expander (30,40, 14) and feeding the output signal (S2) of the expander to the inverting input of the amplifier (100).
