    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compsn. adequate for the lower voltage driving of a guest-host liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: This guest-host liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 1, 2 which are joined to each other via a prescribed spacing, guest- host liquid crystals 4 which contain dichromatic dyestuff 3 and are held in the spacing between both substrates 1 and 2 and counter electrodes 5 and reflection electrodes 6 which is formed on the respective substrate 1, 2 and impress voltages on these guest-host liquid crystals 4. The guest-host liquid crystal layer 4 are mainly composed of a nematic liquid crystal compsn. having dielectric anisotropy within a range of -2 to -10. Nematic liquid crystal molecules 7 are oriented perpendicularly to the upper and lower substrates 1, 2.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a stable ferroelectric liq. crystal exhibiting a high level of spontaneous polarization, which comprises a biphenyl ester compd. having a fluorine atom at an asymmetric carbon atom thereof. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liq. crystal comprises a biphenyl ester compd. having a fluorine atom at an asymmetric carbon atom thereof and represented by the formula (wherein n and m are respectively integers of 6-20 and 3-20). This liq. crystal exhibits a high level of spontaneous polarization PS and is a stable ferroelectric liq. crystal. Since the value of spontaneous polarization is sufficiently large, even if the crystal is mixed with other various types of liq. crystals so as to obtain a practical liq. crystal compsn., it is easy to attain a desired value of spontaneous polarization and to realize a high response speed. Moreover, an electro-optical element utilizing the response of the dielectric liq. crystal to the electric field of the SmC* phase has higher response speed than that of a TN-type liq. crystal element, and it is possible to provide the same with memory by the application of an appropriate orientation control method. Therefore, applications of the electro-optical element are found in a high-speed optical shutter and a display device improved in the amt. of displayed information.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain good optical stability by forming at least one layer among the recording layers provided on the surface of a substrate by a vacuum deposition method and by constituting said layer in such a manner as to contain a specific spiropyran compd. CONSTITUTION:At least one layer of the recording layers is formed by the vacuum deposition method and contains the spiropyran compd. expressed by formula I and/or II. In formula I, R1-R8 denote an alkyl group of 1-5C, etc.; R denotes an alkyl group of >=6C. In formula II, R10-R16 denotes an alkyl group, etc. of 1-5C; R16 denotes an alkyl group of >=6C. The alkyl group of 1-5C signifies a methyl group, etc. and the alkyl group of >=6C signifies a hexyl group, etc. The use of 6-nitro-8-methoxy-1'-n-hexyl-3, etc., among these compds. is more preferred for the good vapor deposition characteristic thereof. The troubles by a spin coating method are thereby eliminated and the good stability is obtd.

USE:Showing absorption characteristics approximately at 780nm, a wavelength range of semiconductor laser and improved color preservation. Therefore, a photochromic sensitized material using a photochromic compound is useful as a medium for reproduction of semiconductor laser record, also usable for various recording, recording material, copying material, etc., and further useful as optical filter, display material, etc. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula II (X is p-toluenesulfonic acid ion, etc.,) is reacted with a compound shown by formula III in the presence of a base to give a compound shown by formula I.

CONSTITUTION:The photosensitive layer is made of the photosensitive compsn. composed essentially of a polymer, such as polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, or polyvinyl butyral, and the indolinospirobenzothiopyran compd. represented by formula I, each of R1, R2, R3 being H, halogen, 1-5C alkyl, such alkoxymethyl, hydroxymethyl, or alkylaminomethyl. This photosensi tive layer is exposed to UV rays and converted into a colored state and then, heat treated.
