    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device excellent in productivity without requiring alignment treatment, by driving picture elements adjacent to a 1st picture element by the driving polarity reverse to that of the 1st picture element, providing liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy, and providing an alignment layer with a vertical alignment property. SOLUTION: Picture elements adjacent to a 1st picture element 2 in the vertical and horizontal directions are driven by the driving polarity reverse to that of the 1st picture element 2. An upper substrate 11 and a lower substrate 21 are fixedly bonded with an adhesive 32 containing spacers 31 for keeping a predetermined spacing between the substrates. Insides of electrodes 12, 22 each are further provided with alignment layers 13, 23 for aligning the liquid crystal 33. The alignment layers 13, 23 having vertical alignment property are used. The liquid crystal 33 is enclosed between the alignment layers 13, 23. As the liquid crystal 33, liquid crystal composition with negative dielectric polarity (dielectric anisotropy) is enclosed inside of the cell. Thus, the high reliability liquid crystal display device is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To easily manufacture a liquid crystal element having good characteristics in a short time and at a low cost by disposing a pair of substrates, on each of which a transparent electrode(s) and a liquid crystal oriented film are successively formed in this order, opposite to each other with a prescribed space and placing a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the space. CONSTITUTION: In this element, a number of stripe-like transparent electrode layers 23a are formed on the inner surface of one transparent substrate 22a and a coating resin layer 20 is stuck to the inner surface of the substrate 22a in such a state that these transparent electrode layers 23a are coated with the coating resin layer 20 and also, a SiO obliquely vapor-deposited layer 24a used as a liquid crystal oriented film is stuck to the coating resin layer 20. Further, a transparent electrode layer 23b and a SiO obliquely vapor-deposited layer 24b used as a liquid crystal oriented film are successively laminated on the inner surface of the other transparent substrate 22b, similarly to the substrate 22a and the liquid crystal oriented films 24a and 24b are disposed opposite to each other.     Abstract: PURPOSE: To enable the writing of a recording pit finer than the diffraction limit of reproducing light by together using a saturable absorbing dye showing saturable absorbability at the wavelength of reproducing light and a recording dye performing recording by the irradiation with recording light having a wavelength shorter than the aforementioned wavelength. CONSTITUTION: Laser beam with a wavelength λ1 for reproduction is allowed to be incident on an optical recording medium through an optically transparent substrate 1 to be absorbed by an ultra-high resolving power layer 12A containing a saturable absorbing dye. Whereupon, a spot center part high in intensity of laser beam LD permits beam to almost transmit by saturable absorption and reflectivity is enhanced. Therefore, the spot diameter of laser beam becomes smaller than a usual one and the difference of reflection quantity due to the pit 13 formed by irradiating a recording layer 12B containing a recording dye with laser beam with a wavelength λ2 . and the reflecting layer 14 with an area other than that can be read. By this constitution, the writing of a recording pit finer than the diffraction limit of reproducing beam becomes possible.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make it possible to largely take a reflectivity difference by presence or absence of pits and to execute signal reproduction at high C/N with decreased errors. CONSTITUTION:This optical recording medium of a reproduction-only type is constituted by forming a reflection layer 4 on a substrate 1 formed with the pits 5 as ruggedness with the arranging patterns corresponding to information signals. This optical recording medium for super-resolution reproduction is further constituted by forming a material film 3 having the optical constant changing with photoirradiation or temp. rise between the substrate 1 and the reflection layer 4 in addition to the constitution described above. The pits 5 of the optical recording medium described above are formed to such shapes which are shorten in the length in the scanning direction of a reproducing light spot than the length in a direction orthogonal therewith. Then, the recording information quantity of, for example, about 4 times the present recording information quantity is stored in the optical recording medium of the same size without applying a drastic change, such as shortening of the wavelength of the reproduced light, increasing of the numerical aperture NA of a focusing lens or changing of a signal demodulation system, to the device side.
