    Abstract: A data channel to transmit data from a transmitter to one or more of a plurality of receivers, each of which intermittently reports to the transmitter its reception quality of signals transmitted by the transmitter. The transmitter transmits the data in frames which include at least one block. Each block includes the same predefined number of traffic symbols , and includes a header portion and a payload portion. The header portion of each block is packaged for transmission in a robust manner, enhancing the probability that each receive r will be able to recover it and the header portion includes information required to recover the paylo ad portion. The payload portion is, in accordance with the reception quality reported by the intende d receiver, packaged to make efficient use of the transmission resources while ensuring a reasonable probability that the intended receiver will be able to recover the payload. The header portion ca n include indications of the modulation, forward error correction and repetition utilized to package the payload and can indicate the length of the payload.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for exchanging electronic information during a voice telephone call. A subscriber during a voice telephone call can provide subscriber-input to their telephone or to request a transfer of electronic information to one or more other subscribers during a voice telephone call. The present invention thus obviates the need for manually transcribing electronic information such as email addresses, facsimile number or web-page addresses during a voice telephone call.

    Abstract: A data channel for transmitting data from a base station to subscriber stations is provided. Each subscriber station has a different service-class which reflects the reception-quality of the data transmitted from the base station. The data channel is organized into a plurality of frames. Each frame contains service-class information that is packaged in the frame in such a manner that all subscriber stations can recover the service-class information. The frame also includes payload data destined for at least one of the subscriber stations. The payload data is packaged in the frame in such a manner that the subscriber station having payload data destined therefore can recover its payload data, regardless of its service class. Subscriber stations that have no payload data destined therefore, and/or which are in a poorer service-class than the destined subscriber-stations, can use the service-class information to determine that the remainder of the frame can be ignored. An apparatus, system and method relating to the data channel are also provided.

    Abstract: A method and system for managing a telephony connection on hold to reduce t he use of resources within the telephony network and/or to allow the user on ho ld to place their telephony device into an on-hook state after they have been placed on hold. In two embodiments, a user of a telephony device who has been placed on hold can initiate a Smart Hold whereby their telephony device can be placed in an on-hook state while on hold and the use r will be signaled when the call is to be removed from hold. This allows the user to perform other activities while a Smart Hold has been implemented, without the need to keep a telephone handse t to their ear, for example. The freeing up of local loop resources can also be achieved. In another embodiment, the Smart Hold can be initiated by either party to a connection without requirin g cooperation of the other party. In some embodiments, no toll charges or the like will be incurr ed while the Smart Hold is in effect.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for managing voicemails over a wireless local loop. The system provides for the placement of a voicemail client local to the subscriber and a voicemail server at the base station. The voicemail server and voicemail client cooperate with the base station to determine appropriate times to transfer voicemails over the WLL and thereby free-up bandwidth on the WLL for higher priority traffic, such as voice calls. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method for receiving voicemails utilizing the system. Yet another embodiment provides a method for delivery of voicemails from a caller to destination subscriber. Various prioritization criteria can be used to provided desired utilization of bandwidth.

    Abstract: The present invention relates generally to telecommunications, and more specifically, to an improved operating system and apparatus for telecommunications networks. Currently, the majority of telecomm services ar e provided over the Public Switched Telephone Network and Internet. Existing telephony systems suffer from a number of problems including system complexity, limited access and implementation of services on fixed hardware, which results in long time to bring new products to market. Internet applications can not guarantee quality of service in the transmission. These systems are therefore inflexible and inefficient which limits their ability to carry new services. The invention provides an operating system for use over varied telecommunications networks which is distributed in real-time. As wel l, methods of implementing synchronized execution, fault tolerance and loading management over this network, are also described. The application of this operating system to existing networks allows new services to be provided.

    Abstract: The present invention relates generally to telecommunications, and more specifically, to a system and method of managing telecommunication connections. In telephony, the set up, maintenance and tear down of communications is implemented in a very inflexible and predetermined manner which impedes the addition of new features. The Internet is generally used a s a simple transport network that is insensitive to performance requirements a nd therefore is a hindrance to high bandwidth services. The invention provides a system for managing connections which employs a proxy for each entity in the communication including each user and each telecommunication network. This allows a communication to be established with consideration for the resource s available to each entity, in their respective limitations. This allows new services to be implemented over multiple networks, with the assurance that t he necessary bandwidth and other resources will be available.

    Abstract: The present invention relates generally to telecommunications, and more specifically to a method and system of providing telecommunication services that is flexible and efficient. Existing Public Switched Telephone Network systems suffer from a number of problems including system complexity, access being proprietary and services being implemented on fixed hardware. As a result, new services are complex and costly to develop, so telcos only provi de services that appeal very broadly. The invention provides an open and flexib le system by describing communications in terms of graph packets which contain pointers to blocks of software code, rather than containing large blocks of executable code. In the preferred embodiment, these graphs identify software filters which are dedicated to particular tasks, and are based on a standard API. This allows third parties to create new filters and make them available , allowing new services to be provided quickly and easily.
