    Abstract: The invention relates to hydrogels capable of absorbing aqueous fluids, which hydrogels are produced by polymerization of olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids or their derivatives. The hydrogels are characterized in that before, during or after the polymerization reaction and before drying a silicic acid alkali salt of the general formula (I) M2O×nSiO2 is added to the polymerization reaction mixture. In said formula M is an alkali metal and n is a number between 0.5 and 4. The hydrogel obtained in this way is then dried at an elevated temperature. The invention also relates to a method for producing said hydrogels and to their use for absorbing aqueous fluids.

    Abstract: New mixtures (F i) of at least two (preferably 2-4) compounds (I), each having at least two double bonds and where at least two of (I) have at least two (meth)acrylate ester groups as double bond components, have a weight-functionality ratio (WFR) value (defined as the sum of the (molar fraction times molecular weight divided by number of double bonds) values for all the components (I)) of 200-600 (preferably 250-350) g per mole double bond. Independent claims are included for: (a) the preparation of (F i); (b) the production of a crosslinked hydrogel (CHG), by polymerizing the mixture (F i) with (meth)acrylic acid, optionally other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers (N) and optionally further copolymerizable hydrophilic comonomer(s) (M) in presence of radical initiator(s) (K) and optionally graft substrate(s) (L), then optionally post-crosslinking, drying and optionally milling and/or screening; (c) polymers obtained by the above CHG production method; (d) CHG's, containing at least one M in polymerized form and crosslinked with (F i); (e) mixtures comprising (by weight) 0.1-40% (F i) and (meth0acrylic acid, 0.5-99.9% (M), 0-10% esterification catalyst(s) (C), 0-5% polymerization inhibitor(s) (D), 0-10% solvent (E) and optionally diluents (G) to 100%; (f) CHG's obtained from the mixtures, followed by optionally post-crosslinking, drying and optionally milling and/or screening.

    Abstract: Trimethylolpropane esters are new. Trimethylolpropane esters are of formula (1). (1) AO : OCH2CH2, OCH2CH(CH3), OCH(CH3)CH2, n1-n3 : 4-6; n1+n2+n3+n4 : 14-16; m1-m3 : 1-3; m1+m2+m3 : 4-6; R1-R3 : 4-6 Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for the production of esters of formula (1) by reaction of alkoxylated trimethylolpropane with (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of at least one esterification catalyst (C) and at least one polymerization inhibitor (D) as well as optionally a solvent (E) that forms an azeotrope with water; optionally removal of at least a portion of the water from the reaction mixture during or after the water from the reaction, optiionally neutralizing the reaction mixture; optionally removing the solvent if present by distillation and/or stripping with an inert gas; (2) across-linked hydrogel prepared by polymerization of an ester of formula (1) with (meth)acrylic acid with optionally additional monoethylenicaly unsaturated compounds (N) as well as optionally at least a further copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer (M) in the presence of at least one radicatl initiator (K) and optionally a graft base (L); optionally cross-linking of the resulting reaction mixture; drying of the reaction mixture and optionally grinding the reaction mixture; (3) a mixture comprising 0.1-40 wt.% of a ester of formula (1) and (meth)acrylic acid, 0.5-99.9 wt.% of a hydrophilic monomer (M), 0-10 wt.% of an esterification catalyst (C), 0-5 wt.% polymerization inhibitor (D) and 0-10 wt.% sovlent (E).
