Abstract: The present invention provides methods of conducting chemical reactions in a reaction channel that has an varying cross-sectional area such that a chemical reactant or reactants experience varying local contact time as the reactant(s) flow through the channel. The invention also provides reactors having reaction channels with varying cross-sectional areas. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the reaction channel section has a trapezoidal shape that becomes broader from the inlet toward the outlet.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for gas phase reactant catalytic reactions. In particular the present invention relates to a method of hydrocarbon steam reforming, comprising: passing a reactant stream comprising steam and hydrocarbon into at least one reaction chamber; wherein the reaction chamber has an internal volume having dimensions of chamber height, chamber width and chamber length; wherein the chamber has a length of greater than 1 cm; wherein the chamber height or chamber width is 2 mm or less; wherein the reaction chamber is in thermal contact through a reaction chamber wall with an exothermic reaction chamber; transferring heat from the exothermic reaction chamber to the reaction chamber through the reaction chamber wall at a rate such that heat flux between the reaction chamber and the exothermic reaction chamber is at least 0.6 W per cubic centimeter of the reaction chamber wall; wherein the method is controlled under conditions such that the hydrocarbon has a contact time of less than 300 ms; wherein the reactant stream is converted to a product stream; and wherein at least 70% of the equilibrium conversion of the hydrocarbon entering the reaction chamber is converted to hydrogen, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the steam reforming of a hydrocarbon, comprising: passing a feed stream comprising hydrocarbon gas and steam into at least one reaction chamber; said reaction chamber comprising a catalyst that catalyzes the reaction of said hydrocarbon gas and steam to produce a gaseous mixture comprising at least carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas; wherein the contact time of the reactant with the catalyst is less than 0.3 seconds; transferring heat from at least one heat exchanger into the at least one reaction chamber; and producing more than 0.01 SLPM of hydrogen gas per cubic centimeter of reactor volume, where reactor volume is defined as the sum of the volume of the reaction chamber(s) and heat exchange chamber(s) including the volume of chamber walls.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus (vessel) for providing a heat transfer rate from a reaction chamber through a wall to a heat transfer chamber substantially matching a local heat transfer rate of a catalytic thermal chemical reaction. The key to the invention is a thermal distance defined on a cross-sectional plane through the vessel inclusive of a heat transfer chamber, reaction chamber and a wall between the chambers. The cross-sectional plane is perpendicular to a bulk flow direction of the reactant stream, and the thermal distance is a distance between a coolest position and a hottest position on the cross-sectional plane. The thermal distance is of a length wherein the heat transfer rate from the reaction chamber to the heat transfer chamber substantially matches the local heat transfer rate.
