    Abstract: PURPOSE:To readily obtain glycolic acid, by bringing glyoxylic acid into contact with zinc under mild condition to carry out partial reduction. CONSTITUTION:Zinc, preferably zinc dust in an larger amount than stoichiometric one is charged into an aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid in 40-50wt% concentration, thoroughly mixed and stirred at 15-60 deg.C for 30 min-12hr to afford the aimed glycolic acid. An inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, etc., may be added in order to control the reaction rate. The reaction may be optionally carried out by a batch or multistage continuous reaction process with plural agitated vessels. EFFECT:Production equipment is extremely simple without requiring the reaction carried out at high temperature under high pressure.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled crystals, economically by cooling an aqueous solution of acrylamide in a double-pipe or multitubular heat exchanger, in which the aqueous solution is passed through the inside of cooling pipes, made of stainless steel and electropolished and a refrigerant liquid is passed through the outside thereof. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of acrylamide is cooled in a double-pipe or multitubular heat exchanger, in which the aqueous solution of acrylamide is passed through the inside of cooling pipes made of stainless steel and a refrigerant liquid is passed through the outside thereof, to crystallize the acrylamide. In the process, the cooling pipes are characterized in that the inside thereof is electropolished. The liquid flow velocity at the cooling heat transfer surface must be increased to carry out the cooling and crystallizing of a substance readily causing scale deposition, e.g. acrylamide. A multitubular heat exchange capable of increasing the heat transfer area is particularly preferred for the type of the cooler. The effect of the electropolishing seems to produce good results on a scaling phenomenon of acrylamide crystals by the change in surface conditions of the metal.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by carrying out hydrogenation in the presence of an oxidant when the aimed product is produced by subjecting maleic acids to ozone oxidation in an alcohol solvent, reducing the oxidized product in the presence of a hydrogen addition catalyst and then hydrolyzing the reduced product. CONSTITUTION:Maleic acids are subjected to ozone oxidation in an alcohol solvent and then reduced in the presence of 0.1ppm-about 1wt.% oxidant based on the above-mentioned raw material using a conventional hydrogenation catalyst. Then the product is hydrolyzed to readily provide glyoxylic acids useful as intermediates for various kind of chemicals such as medicine modifying agent, cosmetic, perfume or agricultural chemical in extremely reduced amount of oxalic acid which is a by-product and extremely high yield at an industrial scale.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound in high selectivity and simply in producing glyoxylic acid by oxidizing glyoxal with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ferrous ion, by using the raw material from which liberated molecular oxygen is removed to suppress side reactions. CONSTITUTION:In producing glyoxylic acid useful as an intermediate for various chemicals such as drug modulator, cosmetic, perfume, agricultural chemicals, etc., by oxidizing glyoxal with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent in the presence of ferrous ion such as ferrous sulfate, etc., liberated molecular oxygen dissolved in the raw material or in the oxidizing agent is preremoved and the reaction is carried out to suppress formation of formic acid and oxalic acid as by-products and to raise selectivity of the aimed compound. Since the reaction is carried out at a relatively low temperature of about 0-30 deg.C, preferably about 0-15 deg.C, no organic highly coloring component is produced. Consequently, a high-quality aqueous solution containing the aimed compound is simply obtained.

CONSTITUTION:In obtaining a 2-hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate by distilling a reaction solution prepared by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with a alkylene oxide, the inner wall faces of a reactor and/or a distillation device made of stainless steel is partially or totally electropolished to prevent polymerization of the 2-hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate in the reaction and/or distillation and production is carried out smoothly.
