Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station (101) has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station (101) is in communication with, referred to as an "Active Set". In addition, the mobile station (101) maintains another list of base stations (300) that are proximate to the base stations (300) in the active set. This list is referred to as the "Neighbor Set". A memory within the mobile station (101) includes information that would allow the mobile station (101) to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations (300) on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station (101) places a base station (300) in the active set upon including the base station (300) in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).

Abstract: A system provides wireless data service. The system includes a wireless modem configured to be coupled to a terminal equipment unit over a wireline broadcast medium. A network unit is coupled to the wireless modem over a wireless link connection. A network remote server is coupled to the network unit. The network remote server provides IP address information in response to terminal equipment unit address request messages for terminal equipment units coupled to the network unit. In addition, a local server is coupled to the wireless modem. The local server provides IP address information in response to terminal equipment unit address request messages from terminal equipment units coupled to the wireline broadcast medium.

Abstract: Synchronization and bit count integrity of a synchronous data stream is preserved end to end even as it is transmitted via a medium which does not preserve the synchronous nature of the synchronous data stream. A terminal equipment unit produces a constant rate bit stream which is provided to a communications unit. The communications unit produces first, second, and third data frames comprising, respectively, first, second, and third set of bits from the constant rate bit stream and first, second, and third length fields. The first, second, and third data frames are transmitted to a base unit which places the first set of bits from the first frame into a queue. A set of fill bits equal to the maximum number of bits contained in any frame is then placed into the queue. The base unit then determines the number of bits in the second set of bits of the third data frame, based on the first length field value and the third length field value. The base unit overwrites excess fill bits in the queue with the third set of bits. The number of excess fill bits is equal to the difference between the maximum possible number of bits which may be contained in any frame and the number of bits in the second set of bits.

Abstract: Method for reducing call dropping rates in a multi-beam communication system that includes a user terminal, a gateway, and a plurality of beam sources projecting a plurality of beams, and where a link between the user terminal and the gateway is established on one or more beams. The method relies on a messaging protocol between the gateway and the user. Based on messages sent from the user to the gateway, preferably on a preselected periodic basis, th e gateway determines the more desirable beam(s) for transmitting to the user. The messages sent from the user to the gateway contain values representing beam strengths as measured at the user. The gateway uses the user measured beam strengths to select the beams that should be used for the user. The bea ms to be used are the beams that will decrease the call dropping rates and provide a desired level of beam source diversity.

Abstract: A method of invoking and canceling voice and data service between a mobile unit and a base station. Using a standard telephone system, the connection for a voice service and a data service is the same. With the introduction of the digital wireless link, the voice connection and the data connection are different. Therefore new dialing commands which indicate the intent of the connection are created. These commands can also be used to designate the intent of the call from a mobile unit capable of data and voice service but not capable of simultaneous voice and data service. They can also be used to invoke simultaneous voice and data services.

A set of fill bits equal to the maximum number of bits contained in any frame is then placed into the queue (150). The base unit (118) then determines the number of bits in the second set of bits of the third data frame, based on the first length field value and the third length field value. The base unit (118) overwrites excess fill bits in the queue (150) with the third set of bits. The number of excess fill bits is equal to the difference between the maximum possible number of bits which may be contained in any frame and the number of bits in the second set of bits.

Abstract: To reduce the power consumption of a remote unit in a dispatch system the remote unit enters a dormant state. A base station (32) transmits a forward link broadcast signal and monitors a common access channel. A first remote unit (10) continually receives and decodes the forward link broadcast signal and determines whether said forward link broadcast signal comprises active signals (106). If the remote unit determines that the forward link broadcast signal comprises no active signals for some a duration T1, the first remote unit enters a dormant mode (148). In the dormant mode the remote unit sporadically receives and decodes said forward link broadcast signal. If this remote unit or any other remote unit on the same net presses a push to talk button (128, 130), it transmits a message on the common access channel. In response, every remote unit on the net which is in a dormant state exits the dormant state and continually monitors the forward link broadcast signal.

Abstract: In a dispatch system, power of the forward link broadcast channel transmitted from a base station is controlled such that the power level is the minimum necessary and such that transmission of the forward link broadcast channel is terminated if no remote unit (10) is located within the coverage area of the base station (32). In addition to transmitting a forward link broadcast signal, the base station monitors an access channel. A first remote unit (10) in the base station coverage area receives and decodes the forward link broadcast signal. The first remote unit (10) determines a signal quality of said forward link broadcast signal. If the signal quality is unacceptable, the remote unit transmits a power request access message. The base station responds to the request by increasing the transmission power of forward link broadcast channel (70). If no requests are received at the base station, the forward link broadcast channel is slowly decreased to a minimum (54). Transmission of the forward link broadcast channel may be terminated completely (58).
