    Abstract: Method and apparatus for transmitting a signal at a predetermined level of reliability using retransmission of erroneously transmitted frames so as to minimize total transmission energy. The transmitting station evaluates the frame error rate (FER) as a function of energy. Next, the transmitting station determines a combination of initial transmission energies and retransmission energies that will provide the target level of reliability while minimizing the total transmission energy employed in the initial transmission and the retransmissions. The transmitting station transmits a frame with an initial transmission energy. Employing conventional feedback methods the transmitting station is alerted to the occurrence of frame errors at the receiving station. The transmitting station upon notification of a frame error retransmits the frame with an energy determined to minimize the total energy required to transmit the frame with a predetermined level of reliability.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for congestion control in a wireless communication system. Individual target data rate values are assigned individual access terminals. The individual data rates of the access terminals are adjusted to achieve the corresponding individual target data rate values. If the target values are not achieved within a predetermined number of iterations, the individual data rate is adjusted. In one embodiment, the status of a congestion bit indicates the type of adjustment, such as increase or decrease, wherein the status of the congestion bit is determined by comparing a congestion parameter to a predetermined threshold. One embodiment implements an outerloop threshold having a margin with respect to the desired congestion metric threshold. According to one embodiment, a congestion indicator includes multiple bits, wherein at least one bit instructs the mobile station to use target values or else to adjust without regard to a target value.

    Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for reducing peak to average ratio in a system using auxiliary pilot channels as described in the TIA/EIA TR45.5 "cdma2000 ITU-R RTT Candidate Submission" to the ITU for consideration in the third generation wireless communication systems. A first method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to alter the phase of the auxiliary pilot channels to reduce to prevent the auxiliary pilot channels from adding constructively. A second method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to gate out the portion of the auxiliary pilot channels that add constructively. The present invention also proposes a novel demodulator design for receiving signals using the modified auxiliary pilot signals.
