    Abstract: In a channel structure for use in communication systems, two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link (50) and another for the reverse link (52), are utilized to facilitate communication of a variety of logical channels. The physical channels comprise data and control channels. In the exemplary embodiment, the data channels comprise fundamental channels which are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information and supplemental channels which are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels can be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilize the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information.

    Abstract: A system and method for adjusting forward traffic channel power allocation in a communications system, wherein signal qualities of pilot channels respectively transmitted by multiple base stations in an active set of a mobile station, are measured by the mobile station, compared to a signal quality standard, and the comparison results reported to a system controller, thereby to indicate which of the pilots at the mobile station surpass the standard. The system controller then adjusts the forward channel power allocation based on the comparison results.

    Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism in a remote station (6) measures reverse link power control bits which are transmitted by one or more base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) on a forward traffic channel (10a). At the remote station (6) the reverse link power control bits from multiple base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link (12a, 12b) power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station (6) generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) in communication with the remote station (6). Each base station (4a, 4b, 4n) adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel (10a) in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels (10a) of the base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.
