    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily obtain a carbon fiber having dense texture and excellent strength, modulus, etc., by infusibilizing a carbon fiber precursor in an oxidizing atmosphere and carbonizing the fiber in an inert atmosphere under pressure. CONSTITUTION:A precursor for carbon fiber (e.g. acrylic fiber, pitch fiber or rayon fiber) is subjected to infusibilizing treatment or flame-resisting treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere (preferably air) under tension or drawing condition preferably at 200-300 deg.C. The produced fiber is carbonized by heating in an inert atmosphere at preferably 300-1000 deg.C under pressure (preferably 5-100kg/ cm .G) to obtain the objective carbon fiber.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:Acrylic carbon fibers are anodized in a specific electrolyte solution, than heat-treated in an inert or reductive atmosphere to product carbon fibers for making composite materials of superhigh strength. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic carbon fibers with an average filament strength of more than 400kg/mm are anodized in an electrolyte solution which contains nitrate ions and is kept over 40 deg.C using the carbon fibers as the anode with a currency of about 50-600coulombs/g of fibers. Then, the fibers are washed with water, dried and heat-treated at 600-1,000 deg.C in an inert or reductive atmosphere to inactivate their surfaces. Thus, although the completeness of crystals are low on the ultrathin outermost layer, the completeness of crystals on the surface layer is substantially at the same level as in the core part of the fibers to give carbon fibers than 600kg/mm strength as a strand which is impregnated with a resin.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably producing a flame resistant fiber at a low cost from an acrylic copolymer without using a solvent for spinning, and further to provide a method for producing a high-quality carbon fiber from the flame-resistant fiber. SOLUTION: This method for producing the flame-resistant fiber comprises heating the acrylic copolymer so as to have 60-80% retention of nitrile group in an inert gas atmosphere, melting the resultant copolymer, spinning the melted acrylic copolymer from a nozzle to form a fiber-shaped material, and heating the resultant fiber-shaped material to 200-280 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere to provide the objective flame-resistant fiber.
