    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black synthetic quartz glass with a transparent layer, which has high emissivity in the far infrared region, has excellent light-shielding properties, maintains the same degree of purity as synthetic quartz glass in terms of metal impurities, has high-temperature viscosity characteristics comparable to natural quartz glass, can undergo high-temperature processing like welding, and does not release carbon from its surface; together with a method for the production thereof. SOLUTION: A porous silica glass body containing hydroxyl groups is subjected to a gas phase reaction in a volatile organosilicon compound atmosphere at a temperature between 100°C and 1,200°C and, following the reaction, evacuation is commenced and, on reaching a degree of vacuum exceeding 10 mmHg, heating is carried out at a temperature between 1,200°C and 2,000°C to produce a compact glass body.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ultraviolet ray transmitting quartz glass having durability against an ultraviolet ray even when used in a use condition becoming relatively hot such as a discharge vessel of a lamp, and having high transmittance for a short-wavelength ultraviolet ray.
    SOLUTION: This lamp emits an ultraviolet ray having a wavelength below 190 nm from a discharge vessel made of quartz glass. The discharge vessel is characterized by being formed of quartz glass containing 110-500 wt.ppm of an OH group, and 1-1,500 wt.ppm of F. In this ultraviolet irradiation device comprising: a lamp for radiating an ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of 190 nm; a casing used for housing the lamp and filled with an inert gas; a window member made of quartz glass for closing the opening formed at a part of the casing. The window member is characteristically formed of the quartz glass containing 110-500 wt.ppm of an OH group, and 1-1,500 wt.ppm of F.
