Abstract: 1471969 Biological cell classification by fluorescence scattering and absorption PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY Inc 28 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973 18 Oct 1974] 51594/74 Heading G1A Apparatus 10 for classifying biological cells 28 in a fluid suspension, which are responsive to light by absorption, scattering or fluorescence comprises a laser 12 supplying a multiwavelength beam 13; and means 16 for splitting it into beams 18-24 of different wavelengths, through which cells 28 are caused to flow in flow-cell 26; and photo-cells 30-36 for measuring the cell response to the light. The method of doing this is claimed. 12 can be an argon-ion laser providing wavelengths of 514, 502, 4965, 488, 476À5 and 458 nm. When cells 28 are stained with fluorochromes, secondary fluorescence is detected by photo-cells 30-36, which are coupled to amplifiers 38-44, and can have filters to detect primary fluorescence of the cells at different wavelengths, and can also be used to measure absorption or scattering. Means 48 is a cell separator. In means 50 the cells are formed into charged droplets which are then separated according to their charge by a static field. If a cell is stained with different stains which respond to different wavelengths, an output corresponding to the fluorescence of each can be obtained from detectors 30-36 and the ratios analyzed by computer 46 to classify the cells. An additional single photocell large enough to receive fluorescence due to all of the beams 18-24 may be used. This gives a pulse train as a cell passes the beams. The flowthrough and classification may be continuous.

Abstract: A dual color radiometer method for detection and discrimination of radiant energy emissivity characteristics of preselected atmospheric states. The dual output signals from the radiometer and corresponding to a respective first and second atmospheric spectral sample in a preselected spectral region, are differentially combined, one of the spectral sample signals being compensatorily gain changed such that the component signal intensity in both such output signals for a preselected atmospheric state are equal. Thus, the differentially combined signals provide a resultant signal indicative of an atmospheric state other than such preselected atmospheric state.

Abstract: An inspection device is disclosed which includes a color sensor which has a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements each being responsive to respective different wave lengths of light from an object to be inspected and producing an electrical signal, a zero balance setter which processes the output signal from the color sensor and then takes a zero balance, a tolerance range setter which receives the output of the zero balance setter and produces an abnormal signal in conjunction to a tolerance range of the object to be inspected, a detector which produces an electrical signal to notify when the object arrives at a predetermined location; and a detection location timing section which passes the output of the tolerance range setter by the output signal from the detector.

Abstract: Apparatus for emission spectrochemical analysis wherein the sample to be analyzed is excited by repeated spark discharge to emit light, which is dispersed to produce a spectrum containing emission lines characteristic of the elements in the sample. The intensity or quantity of light of each of the emission lines of the elements to be determined and that of the corresponding one of the emission lines selected as the internal standards for the elements to be determined are measured each time a spark discharge is produced to obtain the ratio of the former intensity or quantity to the latter at each spark discharge, and the ratios resulting from a predetermined number of spark discharges are averaged for each of the elements to be determined. From the average the content of each of the elements is read on a calibration curve.

Abstract: A fiber-optic temperature-measuring apparatus which monitors the photo-luminescence of a body of solid material subjected to the temperature to be measured. Exciting radiation is conducted by means of at least one optical fiber towards a material with temperature-dependent luminescence which is in optical contact with the fiber, whereby luminescence occurs. The radiation emitted as a consequence of the luminescence is transmitted via at least one optical fiber from the body to a place of measurement, where a measure of the temperature may be obtained. The luminescent body may consist of a semiconductor material.
