    Abstract: Methods of holding auctions over the Internet and telephone systems are know n in the art but generally share the following problems: it is difficult for t he auctioneer to identify bidders; telephone conferences are very noisy when th ey have a large number of participants; there is no method of ejecting a bidder who chooses to interfere with the auction; and it is difficult to enforce payment because it is difficult to verify the identity and creditworthiness of bidders. The invention provides for an auction system where bidders are identified using authentication or similar techniques, and their bids are filtered to reduce noise and eliminate unwanted bids or comments before bein g broadcast to the balance of the bidders. Other optional features are also described such as the recording and timestamping of bids.

    Abstract: A feed-forward amplifier having a signal cancellation loop including a cancellation node that includes a gain controller and a phase controller. Each controller provides a discrete tap steering signal and modulates the corresponding tap steering signal with a discrete tracer signal that takes on a preselected sequence of values. The sequence chosen so that the tracer signal is mutually orthogonal to each other tracer signal over a preselected period. A gain and phase adjuster connected to the outputs of the controllers provides a controlled gain change and phase shift in the signal cancellation loop, the magnitude of the gain change and phase shift controlled by the corresponding tap steering signals presented to the gain and phase adjuster by the controllers. A detector, the input of which is connected to the cancellation node and the output of which is connected to the controllers, outputs a measure of the envelope of the signal at the cancellation node. After the preselected period new values for the tap steering signals presented to the gain and phase adjuster by the controllers are obtained by multiplying detector output by the respective tracer signal, each over the respective preselected period, summing each resulting series of values, and changing the tap steering signals to be modulated and presented to the gain and phase adjuster in accordance with the values of the respective sums.

    Abstract: A novel communication channel structure and method in a wireless communication system is provided. In an embodiment of the invention, the communication system includes a base station and a plurality of subscriber stations and the subscriber stations are given access to a variety of channels, including at least one uplink data channel. The uplink data channel can operate in at least a random access mode and a polled access mode. The base station informs each subscriber station it serves of the current mode of the uplink channel via an associated downlink signaling channel and, in random access mode, each subscriber station is able to randomly access the shared uplink channel. In polled mode, each subscriber station waits for permission from the base station before sending data over the shared uplink channel. A method of operating the system monitors the collisions which occur on the uplink channel in random mode and/or the amount of data and/or the data's priority level and/or QoS requirements and switches the system between random and polled modes as appropriate. In polled mode, the method determines which subscriber stations should access the uplink and when.

    Abstract: A communication structure and method which allows connection-like and connectionless communications to be provided on a multiplexed link is provided. The structure and method can make efficient use of available transmission capacity and/or network resources while providing for both types of communication. Connection-like communications can be provided by a channel having allocated bandwidth dedicated to the communication while connectionless communication can be provided by a shared channel through which data can be transmitted to subscribers. In an embodiment, the shared channel transmits frames of packets addressed to one or more of the subscribers. The frames can have a robustly packaged header that can be received by all subscriber stations serviced by the base station while payload data in the frame can be packaged with a level of robustness appropriate for the intended subscriber station. Different packagings can include different encoding and/or modulation of the payload data. The allocation of bandwidth between the dedicated channels and the broadcast channel can be fixed, or can be managed to meet network or network operator requirements. The structure and method can also be managed by the network operator to permit prioritization of some communications over others. In another embodiment, two or more shared channels are provided. In another embodiment, dedicated channels can be created with different amounts of bandwidth and/or can employ modulation and/or encoding selected according to the reception-quality of the recipient station.

    Abstract: A data channel for transmitting data from a base station to subscriber stations is provided. Each subscriber station has a different service-class which reflects the reception-quality of the data transmitted from the base station. The data channel is organized into a plurality of frames. Each frame contains service-class information that is packaged in the frame in such a manner that all subscriber stations can recover the service-class information. The frame also includes payload data destined for at least one of the subscriber stations. The payload data is packaged in the frame in such a manner that the subscriber station having payload data destined therefore can recover its payload data, regardless of its service class. Subscriber stations that have no payload data destined therefore, and/or which are in a poorer service-class than the destined subscriber-stations, can use the service-class information to determine that the remainder of the frame can be ignored. An apparatus, system and method relating to the data channel are also provided.
