Abstract: A micro-displacement type information detection probe device capable of following all of the undulation on the mu m order, etc. and the periodical surface unevenness on the nm order, etc. of the recording medium or the substrate in performing recording, reproduction, etc. by use of tunnel current, etc. is provided. By forming a cantilever 701 of the first stage by extending the insulation layer laminated on the substrate, providing a layer structure 708 - 710 having a piezoelectric material sandwiched between the electrode members on the cantilever of the first stage, forming further a cantilever 702 of the second stage on the extension from the tip end of the first cantilever having said layer structure and also forming an information detection probe 703 at the free end of the cantilever of said second stage, and utilizing the reverse piezoelectric effect formed by application of a voltage between the electrodes of said layer structure, the cantilever 701 of the above first stage is displaced.

Abstract: This specification discloses a method of recording information on a recording medium which has the relative scanning of the recording medium by a probe for information recording, the relative scanning being effected along the surface of the recording medium, the recording medium being capable of forming two or more kinds of state changes relative to the state of non-recording, and a recording process onto the recording medium through the probe effecting the relative scanning, the recording process being carried out by intermittently forming bits on the recording medium, each of the bits being formed with one of the two or more kinds of state changes in conformity with recording information. The specification also discloses a method of reproducing information recorded on a recording medium by such information recording method. The specification further discloses an apparatus for carrying out the information recording method, and an apparatus for carrying out the information reproducing method.

Abstract: A device for detecting positional relationship between a first and second objects (2, 1) in a predetermined direction is disclosed. The device includes light source (10) projecting light upon the first object so that the light incident on the first object (2) is deflected thereby and emanates therefrom in a direction perpendicular to the predetermined direction; a light receiving portion (9) disposed in a direction in which the light having been deflected perpendicularly to the predetermined direction and having been deflected again by the second object advances, the light receiving portion being operable to detect the position of incidence of the light thereupon, wherein the position of the light upon the light receiving means is changeable with the position of incidence of the light upon the second object; and a detecting system for detecting the positional relationship between the first and second objects in the predetermined direction, on the basis of the detection by the light receiving portion.

Abstract: Information reading and/or inputting apparatus has a probe, an electrodes, a detector, a position controller and a probe and portion forming device. By positioning the probe close to an information medium, information reading/inputting is effected in the apparatus. A voltage is applied to the probe through the electrode. Information on distance between the electrode and the probe is detected by the detector and whereby the relative position of the probe to the electrode is controlled by the position controller. The end portion of the probe is reformed in such a manner that a voltage is applied to the end portion of the probe through the electrode under controlling the relative position of the probe to the electrode by the position controller. A high reliable performance for the apparatus can always be attained by the probe reforming mechanism.

Abstract: A device for measuring the relative position of two relatively moving objects includes a diffraction grating (GS) on one object and a measuring head (MH) on the other object (SR), which includes a second diffraction grating (GF1 and 2), a light source (LD) and a photo-detecting system (PD1-4). Two beams (LO1 and LO2) are projected upon two parts of the. second diffraction grating so that different diffraction orders are directed to the same point on the first diffraction grating (GS) and are thereby diffracted along a common path and mutually interfere. The photodetecting system (PD1-4) determines the position from cyclical variations in interference produced by relative movement between the two gratings. Polarising beam splitters (MK21-23) may produce beams out of phase by steps of 45 DEG . In other embodiments a single grating receives two beams at different angles produced by a double refracting prism, and a single grating splits one beam into opposite diffraction orders which are reflected back through the grating and recombined.
