Abstract: Disclosed is a single made optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core design. In particular, the core comprises three segments, each having characteristic dimensions and refractive index profile. By proper choice of index profile in each segment, a waveguide fiber is made which has a mode field diameter of about 9.5, low, positive total dispersion over the operating window 1530 nm to 1565 nm as well as effective area greater than 60 mum 2 .

Abstract: A single mode optical waveguide fiber having a refractive index profile comprising not less than four segments (16, 18, 20, 22) provides waveguide properties well suited to undersea or other long haul telecommunications systems. The novel refractive index profile is characterized by a core segment having a negative relative index, in which, the reference index is that of silica. Another feature of the invention is a cladding layer which contains refractive index increasing dopant at least in the cladding portion adjacent the outermost core segment.

Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core. The relative indexes, the refractive index profiles and the radii of the segments are chosen to provide waveguide fiber properties advantageously used in severe environments, such as, undersea cables. The segmented core waveguide fiber has a negative total dispersion over the operating window of about 1530 nm to 1570 nm, which serves to eliminate soliton formation. The key properties of dispersion zero, cut off wavelength, attenuation, and bend resistance fall within desired ranges. The waveguide also features a low polarization mode dispersion.

Abstract: An optical cross-connect system provides 4x4 switching matrices and self-healing from any single point of failure. The switching matrices route working traffic and redundant protection traffic between a plurality of client network elements and an optical ring. The system also has a client interface for transporting the working traffic and the protection traffic between the switching matrices and the client network elements. The optical cross-connect system further includes a ring interface for transporting the working traffic and the protection traffic between the switching matrices and the optical ring. The switching matrices are structured so that protection is provided from single point failures by electrical switching at the client network element location. This significantly reduces the need for optical switching within the matrices.

Abstract: A single mode optical waveguide fiber having a relatively large effective area, a negative total dispersion at 1560 nm and a low dispersion slope has a segmented core having a central segment (10), a first annular segment (12), a second annular segment (14) and a third annular segment (16). Each segment h as a relative refractive index percent, and an inner and outer radius. The relative refractive index percent and the radii of each core segment are chosen from the following ranges: the relative index of the central segment within the range of about 0.4 % to about 0.9 %; the relative index of the first annular segment within the range of about -0.2 % to about 0.1%; the relative index of the second annular segment within the range of about 0.2 % to about 0.5 %; the relative index of the third annular segment within the range of about -0.2 % to about 0 %; the outer radius (40) of the central segment within the range of about 2.3 m and about 4 m; the center radius (44 ) of the third annular segment within the range of about 7.8 m and about 10 m; and the width of the third annular segment within the range of about 0.5 m t o about 3.5 m.

Abstract: The invention provides improved methods for reducing polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode fiber by spinning the fiber during the drawing process in accordance with a spin function having sufficient harmonic content to achieve low levels of PMD for commercial fibers for which the beat lengths of the fibers, including the beat lengths of different portions of the fibers, are variable and thus not readily known in advance. The spin functions of the invention take advantage of certain resonances in energy transfer between polarization modes to achieve substantial reductions in PMD for a wide range of beat lengths. Examples of suitable spin functions include frequency-modulated and amplitude-modulated sine waves.
