Abstract: A power-conserving time division multiple access (TDMA) radiotelephone system is disclosed in which a cluster of subscriber stations, remote from a base station, employs a common pool of frequency-agile modems each of which digitally synthesizes, on a time slot-by-time slot basis, the different channel-identifying intermediate needed to support communications between several of the subscriber stations and the base station. Power conservation is facilitated inter alia by controlling the assignment of modems to calls, maintaining unassigned modems in a powered-down state and by controlling the number of calls using the same time slot. Delay in assigning a powered-down modem to a call is eliminated by making available to all modems the highest quality synchronization information obtained by any of the active modems.

Loop connection length between the subscriber unit and the subscriber's telephone set, or other terminal equipment, is limited to a length which is much less than the length of a radio link on which the subscriber unit operates. Programmable ring frequency logic controls the frequency of a ringing signal generator, and a high frequency ring control signal is switched on and off in the cadence of ringing operation. Also an expansion header is provided to enable serving plural subscriber loop circuits with the same radio equipment for reducing per line power consumption.

Abstract: Un método para controlar el consumo de energía en una unidad inalámbrica (10) de abonado que se comunica utilizando tramas repetitivas y es capaz de tener un bucle de abonado de longitudes variables, dando servicio el bucle de abonado a un teléfono situado remotamente con respecto a la unidad de abonado, estando caracterizado el método por: determinar una longitud del bucle para un bucle de abonado a utilizar; proporcionar un valor fijo de corriente al bucle de abonado; seleccionar una tensión para alimentar el bucle de abonado basándose en parte de la longitud del bucle de abonado y en el valor fijo de corriente; y alimentar el bucle de abonado con la tensión seleccionada y la corriente fijada, y mantener la corriente fijada en un valor sustancialmente constante independientemente de la tensión seleccionada, ahorrando así energía al tiempo que se mantiene el valor fijo de la corriente, desactivando selectivamente una pluralidad de componentes no identificados como requeridos para el funcionamiento de la unidad de abonado en un estado determinado, siendo realizada dicha desactivación durante la conexión de una llamada y en sucesivas tramas de tiempos durante las ventanas de tiempo que no son requeridas para las operaciones de tratamiento de la señal.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for hierarchically assigning of time slots in a radiotelephone system including a central base station, a plurality of remote subscriber stations, means defining a repetitive set of time slots meant for supporting radiotelephone calls between said subscriber stations and said central base station, a group of modems, each of said modems being capable of handling a plurality of said telephone calls on said time slots, which comprises the stages of : ascertaining the active modems having idle time slots; assigning preference ratings to said idle time slots of said group of modems; ascertaining which of said time slot has the highest of said preference ratings, assigning the time slot corresponding to said highest preference rating ascertained to the next one of said calls.
