Abstract: The present invention provides a method of minimizing synchronization delay in a radiotelephone system between a modular subscriber cluster communicating with a common base station, the modular subscriber cluster receiving repetitive time slots from the base station and having a plurality of frequency-agile modems, the method comprising the steps of: synchronizing a selected one of the modems to a selected time slot of the received time slots; generating a frame sync signal from said selected modem; and distributing said frame sync signal to remaining ones of the plurality of modems.

Abstract: The invention relates to a power-conserving time division multiple access radiotelephone system (TDMA) in which a cluster of subscriber stations, remote from a base station, uses a common group of modems (400), each synthesizing on a time slot-by time slot the different channel-identifying intermediated frequencies needed to support communications between the subscriber station and the base station. The reduced power consumption is obtained, inter alia, by controlling the assignment of modems (400) to calls, by maintaining unassigned modems (400) in a powered-down state and by the control of the number of calls using the same time slot. The assignment delay to a call of a modem (400) in powered-down state is eliminated by making available to all modems (400) the highest quality synchronization information obtained by any one of the active modems (400).
