    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the dispersibility of magnetic powder, surface smoothness and durability by consisting a binder of a polyurethane resin produced by using a specific lactone-modified diol. CONSTITUTION:The binder for magnetic recording consisting of the polyurethane resin produced by using the lactone-modified diol expressed by the formula is used. A magnetic layer constituted by dispersing ferromagnetic powder into such binder is provided on a nonmagnetic base. The lactone-modified diol to be used as the binder has preferably the number average mol.wt. ranging 400-60,000 in terms of the flexibility of the resulted polyurethane resin and the toughness of the resin. The ratio of the binder and the pulverous ferromagnetic powder is preferably in a 10-100pts.wt. binder range with 100pts. pulverous ferromagnetic powder. The pulverous ferromagnetic powder is exemplified by gamma-Fe2O3, mixed crystals or gamma-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, Co-modified iron oxide, CrO.2, iron, etc. The dispersibility and durability are thereby extremely improved.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve magnetic powder dispersibility, durability and surface smoothness by using a specific polyurethane resin as a binder. CONSTITUTION:The polyurethane resin having at least >=1 respectively among an SO2M (M is H, Li, Na or K) and primary or secondary OH group both in combination in the molecular chain is used. A magnetic recording medium is produced by coating a magnetic paint for which the polyurethane resin is used as the binder and to which pulverous ferromagnetic powder and additive, etc. are added together with an org. solvent, on a non-magnetic substrate and drying the coating. The ratio of the binder and the pulverous ferromagnetic powder is 10-100pts.wt., more preferably 20-50pts.wt. by 100pts.wt. pulverous ferromagnetic powder. The mechanical strength and wear resistance are not enough if the ratio of the binder is below 10pts.wt. The magnetic powder density in the magnetic layer decreases and the satisfactory performance (reproduced output, etc.) as the magnetic recording medium is not obtainable if the ratio of the binder is increased to 100pts.wt. or above.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the characteristics of a magnetic coating material as a coating material, to reduce error fate and to improve durability by using specified compds. as a binder and a curing agent in a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer 4 is formed on a middle layer 3 by coating it with a magnetic coating material contg. a binder and a curing agent as well as magnetic powder, carbon powder, inorg. particles having a Mohs hardness of >=8, fatty acid and fatty acid ester. The binder has 3-10 epoxy groups in one molecule and a number average mol.wt. of 10,000-25,000. Since the binder and the curing agent soluble in the solvent for the magnetic coating material are used, the degree of crosslinking of a coating film after coating and drying is increased and the durability is improved. The curing agent has two prim. or sec. amino groups in one molecule and a number average mol.wt. of 500-25,000. In the case of 50,000, the resultant coating film is soft and is not durable.
