Abstract: A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station ( 5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur . In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presenc e of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate th e results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for providing improved quality or power control by recognizing the delays inherent in a closed-loop communication system. The mobile station or receiver properly adjusts its forward link quality or power level thresholds or measurements with which it compares incoming frames or portions thereof to reflect the level it anticipates receiving (after the delay). For example, the mobile station can recognize that at a given measurement time, two outstanding messages have not been executed by the transmitter (where each message indicates a corresponding increase of 1 dB). As a result, the mobile station can adjust its measurement threshold down by 2 dB to more closely correspond to future power adjustments. If the currently received frame or portion thereof is still below the readjusted threshold, then the mobile station sends out a new message to request a further increase in the forward link channel.

Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism in a remote station (6) measures reverse link power control bits which are transmitted by one or more base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) on a forward traffic channel (10a). At the remote station (6) the reverse link power control bits from multiple base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link (12a, 12b) power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station (6) generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) in communication with the remote station (6). Each base station (4a, 4b, 4n) adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel (10a) in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels (10a) of the base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.

Abstract: A system and method for determining the transmission rate of a data signal at a receiver of a variable rate communications system. A vocoder at a transmitter encodes a frame of data into symbols according to one of a set of discrete data rates. When the data rate is lower than the maximum, each symbol is repeated a number of times as required to achieve a constant number of symbols in each frame. The data signal is transmitted at a power proportional to the data rate of the frame. A reference signal is also transmitted. The reference signal is transmitted at a constant power. Further, the data signal has the same carrier frequency as a reference signal so that they exhibit the same fading characteristics as they are transmitted through the channel. At a receiver, the power of the data signal and the power of reference signal are measured as received. The ratio of the power of the data signal to the power of the reference signal is compared with a predetermined ratio of the power of a maximum rate data signal to the power of the reference signal. The result of the comparison will indicate the encoded data rate of the received frame of data. The rate determined by the rate determination system is then used to properly decode the frame of data. A vocoder at the receiver further processes the data for interface with the user.

The result of the comparison will indicate the encoded data rate of the received frame of data. The decoder (40) then uses the rate indicated by the comparison to properly decode the frame of data. A vocoder at the receiver further processes the data for interface with the user.
