Abstract: Provided is a composition comprising an extract of a mixture consisting of Aralia cordata THUNB. and Sophora subprostrata Chun et T. Chen which shows proteoglycan decomposition inhibition activity, and MMP-1 and MMP-3 activity inhibition effect and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity so as to be usefully used as a pharmaceutical composition and a health functional food for preventing and treating arthritis. The composition for preventing and treating arthritis comprises an extract of a mixture consisting of Aralia cordata THUNB. and Sophora subprostrata Chun et T. Chen in a dried weight ratio of 0.1-10:1 as an effective ingredient. To prepare the extract, a polar solvent selected from the group consisting of water, C1-4 lower alcohol, and a mixture thereof is used.
