Abstract: An optical isolator is provided with a substrate, a waveguide layer which is lattice-matched with the substrate, and a nonreciprocal phase shifter. In the optical isolator, a waveguide and a bending waveguide are formed in the waveguide layer for guiding waves in the waveguide layer, and a branch coupler is arranged. The refractive index is made larger than 3.36 by changing the semiconductor composition of the waveguide layer.

Abstract: An easily-producible integrated light isolator having a structure integrating a semiconductor laser and a light isolator integrally in which reverse propagation light of the light isolator is absorbed efficiently and generation of stray light is prevented. In an integrated light isolator where a semiconductor waveguide layer is formed on a compound semiconductor substrate, a semiconductor laser is formed in one part of the semiconductor waveguide layer and a light isolator is formed in the other part, a laser current injection electrode is arranged above the active layer of the semiconductor waveguide layer where the semiconductor laser is formed, and an end absorption layer is arranged at the output end of a reverse propagation light output waveguide of the light isolator on the opposite sides of the semiconductor laser.

Abstract: A waveguide type wideband optical isolator comprising a reciprocal phase shifter for setting a phase difference of 3'/2 between a first light wave propagating on a first waveguide and a second light wave propagating on a second waveguide when the basic operating wavelength is U, and a nonreciprocal phase shifter for imparting a phase difference of '/2 to a forward propagation wave and a phase difference of-'/2 to a reverse propagation wave. With such an arrangement, wavelength dependency of reverse loss is reduced and an available operating wavelength region can be widened. The optical isolator operates in two wavelength bands of 1.31 mum band and 1.55mum band which are employed in long distance optical fiber communication.
