    Abstract: In an optical fiber 1 having a core region 3 and a cladding region 5 which surrounds the core region 3, wherein a plurality of regions made of sub mediums 2 having refractive index different from that of the main medium 4 constituting the cladding region 5 are spaced apart in cross section of the cladding region 5 and the mean refractive index of the core region 3 is lower than that of the cladding region 5, the sub-medium regions 2 are regularly arranged in the radial direction of the optical fiber 1 such that the light having given wavelength, propagation coefficient and electric field distribution propagates along the fiber axis and has not less than 50 % of a total propagating power in the core region 3, and this arrangement does not have translational symmetry in cross section.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a lumped constant type Raman amplifier which is suppressed in the deterioration of the transmission quality of signal light due to nonlinear optical effect and an optical transmission system which uses it. CONSTITUTION: An optical transmission line in the Raman amplifier 1 which transmits the signal light inputted from an input terminal 1a and also processes the signal light by Raman amplification with the exciting light supplied from exciting light source units 21 and 22 is constituted by connecting two optical fibers 11 and 12 for Raman amplification in series, and they are set to mutually different wavelength dispersion values. This constitution makes it possible to control the wavelength dispersion in the amplifier 1 by using a combination of the wavelength dispersion values of the optical fibers 11 and 12 for Raman amplification, etc. Consequently, the deterioration in the transmission quality of the signal light due to nonlinear optical effect is suppressed by preventing dispersion from being accumulated in the signal light and the signal light from being transmitted nearby zero dispersion.
