Abstract: A glass preform for an optical fiber is produced by (a) maintaining a hollow cylindrical porous glass preform in a first high temp. atmos. comprising one or more fluorine-contg. cpds. while passing cooling glass through the preform to give a radial fluroine concn. gradient and (b) sintering the preform in a second higher temp. atmos. to make it transparent. The preform is used in the mfr. of optical fibers having a quartz glass core and a fluorine-doped quartz glass cladding giving low light transmission attenuation.

Abstract: The dispersion shifted single mode optical fiber is manufactured by the stages of preparing a core member consisting of an inner core part made of a germanium-added quartz glass which optionally contains fluorine and an outer core made of a fluorineadded quratz glass having a refractive index smaller than that of the inner core part, making a glass tube made of a fluorine-added quartz galss having a refractive index smaller than that of the outer core part, inserting the core member into the glass tube, heating and fusing them together.
