    Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for preparing glycerol carbonate is provided to obtain glycerol carbonate of high yield using a cheap magnesium oxide catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing glycerol carbonate through reaction of glycerol and urea comprises a step of adding magnesium oxide as a reaction catalyst. The amount of the magnesium oxide catalyst is 0.1-10wt% of glycerol amount. The reaction is performed at 100-170 deg. C for 0.5-5 hours. The magnesium oxide catalyst has 95% or more purity.
