Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for establishing ontology of a product and device using the same are provided to input data to an existing database or a spared sheet even if an engineer does not have knowledge about ontology knowledge base. CONSTITUTION: The highest meta product ontology(MPO)(12) defines concepts about product development as basis meta attributes. A product background knowledge ontology(PCO) includes propositions about background knowledge of a product design. A storage include XML schema and a XML- ontology translation rule table which is generated from the propositions of the product background knowledge ontology and the meta product ontology. A product data input module generates an XML product data by receiving the specific data of a product from a user based on the XML schema. The ontology conversion module converts XML product data into product specific ontology(PSO) according to the XML-ontology conversion rule.
