Abstract: A method for surface treatment of a magnesium alloy, which can form a ceramic coating film with excellent corrosion resistance and high hardness on a surface of a magnesium alloy by generating plasma discharge on the surface of the alloy using an alkaline electrolyte containing specific ions, is provided. A method for surface treatment of a magnesium alloy comprises the steps of: preparing a magnesium alloy sample with a predetermined size; adding a solution containing Si^4+ ions and F^- ions into an alkaline electrolyte; dipping the magnesium alloy sample into the alkaline electrolyte; and forming a ceramic coating film on the surface of the sample by applying an electric current to the magnesium alloy sample while varying process conditions such as the electric current ratio and the waveform, thereby generating plasma discharge on the surface of the sample.
