Abstract: An open coat abrasive article includes a backing having first and second opposed major surfaces, a make coat resin on at least one major surface of the backing, abrasive particles arranged on the backing at least partially embedded in the make coat resin, and a size coat resin on the first resin and the abrasive particles, wherein the shaped abrasive particles have an average peak count of no greater than about 40,000 per 24 in2. A method of abrading in a body-in-white application is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of making a coated abrasive article includes disposing a precursor make layer on a major surface of the backing, optionally partially curing the precursor make layer to provide a partially cured precursor make layer, disposing abrasive particles; partially embedding abrasive particles in the optionally partially cured precursor make layer; and further curing the optionally partially cured precursor make layer to form a make layer. The precursor make layer comprises components comprising: a) 50 to 97.99 percent by weight of phenol-formaldehyde resin; b) 1 to 49 percent by weight of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin; c) 1 to 49 percent by weight of at least one compound having at least one free-radically polymerizable group; and d) 0.01 to 1 percent by weight of a free-radical initiator. A size layer and/or supersize layer may be disposed over the make layer and abrasive articles. Coated abrasive articles made by the method are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of making a coated abrasive article comprises sequential steps: disposing a curable composition on a major surface of a backing b) adhering abrasive particles to the curable composition; c) at least partially curing the free-radically polymerizable component; and d) at least partially curing the phenolic resin component to provide an at least partially cured composition. The curable composition comprises a phenolic resin component, a free-radically polymerizable component, and an organic polymeric rheology modifier, wherein the organic polymeric rheology modifier comprises an alkali-swellable/soluble polymer, and wherein, on a solid basis, the organic polymeric rheology modifier comprises from 0.001 to 5 weight percent of the phenolic resin component, the free-radically polymerizable component, and the organic polymeric rheology modifier combined. A variant wherein step b) effectively occurs after step c) is also disclosed. Abrasive articles made according to the methods are also disclosed.

Another abrasive article comprises: a substrate comprising strands forming first void spaces between strands; a laminate joined to the substrate, wherein the laminate comprises a first polymer and a second polymer; a resin composition joined to the laminate; In both embodiments, abrasive particles are joined to the resin composition, and a plurality of second void spaces extends through the laminate coinciding with first void spaces in the porous substrate. A method of making abrasive articles is also disclosed.
