Abstract: The switch has at least two contact pieces (1,2) and at least one light arc rail (3) adjacent to and connected to at least one contact piece, which does not lie in the current path with the contacts closed and which produces a light arc (4) from the contact piece to the rail when the contact pieces are opened. The light arc rail consists at least partly of positive temperature coefficient conductor material and/or is connected via a PTC conductor (5) to an adjacent contact piece. An Independent claim is also included for a switch arrangement.

Abstract: The electrical resistance element (10) includes a resistance body (3), which is arranged between two plane-parallel, pressurized electrodes (1, 2), has PTC behavior and comprise a polymer matrix and two filler components of electrically conducting particles embedded into the polymer matrix (4). When a short-circuit current occurs, the resistivity of the resistance body (3) changes abruptly above a temperature limit value in a surface layer resting on the electrodes and containing at least a first of the two filler components. A second of the two filler components is elected such that a composite material containing at least the polymer matrix and the second filler component has PTC behavior, with an abruptly changing behavior greater by at least one order of magnitude in comparison with the surface layer. At the same time, this composite material has a resistivity which is lower by at least one order of magnitude than a composite material formed by the polymer matrix and the first filler component. The resistance element has a high nominal current carrying capacity and can limit large shortcircuit currents permanently.

Abstract: The current limiting device is formed by a pair of zig zag shaped PTC resistors (1,2) that are placed in parallel and are separated by an insulating layer. Electrical connection points (A,B) are formed at each end. The reactive layers can be formed in a foil using a chemical or electro-chemical process. The layers may be located in grooves formed in a thermally cooling material that has flow channels through which a cooling fluid flows.
