Abstract: PURPOSE: To prepare a therapeutic agent for AIDS comprising an emulsion composition for parenteral administration containing specific amounts of soybean oil and an egg phosphatide. CONSTITUTION: This emulsion composition for parenteral administration comprises about 2-7wt.%, preferably about 2wt.% soybean oil and about 1-2wt.%, preferably about 1.2wt.% egg phosphatide. The composition has a higher ratio of the egg phosphatide/triglyceride than that of a commercially available lipid emulsion. Thereby, a sufficient level of the egg phosphatide can be provided to promote the mobilization of tissue cholesterol without causing the fat overload. The daily dose of the emulsion is within the range of 5-30mL/kg.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition for parenteral administration, containing a specific amount of γ-linolenic acid as a component and useful for the treatment of the state having low δ-6-desaturase activity such as a neonate having immature enzymatic system, a patient of acute respiratory distress syndrome and a patient of diabetes. CONSTITUTION: This composition contains about 2-30wt.% of fatty acids in terms of triglyceride. The fatty acid contains about 1-25wt.% of γ-linolenic acid. The γ-linolenic acid source is preferably borage oil. The borage oil can be prepared from a dried ripe seed of Borago officionale which is an annual plant of the family Boragionaceae by conventional extraction process such as a low-temperature squeezing extraction. Borago oil contains about 20-25wt.% of γ-linolenic acid to satisfy the requirement of the γ-linolenic acid content of the composition. The composition may be further incorporated with vitamins.
