The present invention provides a color tone correcting agent having suitable heat resistance for use in an optical filter, a novel squarylium compound that is specifically preferable as the color tone correcting agent, and an optical filter including the color tone correcting agent. Specifically, the present invention provides a color tone correcting agent including a squarylium compound represented by the general formula (1), a novel squarylium compound which is represented by the general formula (4) and is preferable as the color tone correcting agent, and an optical filter including the color tone correcting agent. The general formula (1) and (4) are each as defined in the specification.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cyanine compound useful for optical elements, in particular the compound having a sharp light absorption in the wavelength range of 480-500 nm, excellent in lightfastness, particularly suitable for a light absorbent for an optical filter using as an image display device, and to provide an optical filter composed of the compound. SOLUTION: Provided are the cyanine compound represented by general formula (I) and the optical filter composed of the cyanine compound. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter which is especially suitable for an optical filter for an image display device having a sharp light absorption particularly in a wavelength region of 450 to 620 nm. SOLUTION: The optical filter contains at least one kind of cyanin compound expressed by the formula (I). In the formula (I), R 1 to R 4 present respectively independently hydrogen atom, alkyl group having the number of carbon atoms 1 to 8, allyl group having the number of carbon atoms 6 to 20 or allyl-alkyl group having the number of carbon atoms 7 to 20 and R 1 to R 4 may be respectively connected to form a ring. Y 1 and Y 2 present respectively independently alkyl group having the number of carbon atoms 1 to 8, allyl group having the number of carbon atoms 6 to 20 or allyl-alkyl group having the number of carbon atoms 7 to 20, and R 5 and R 6 present respectively independently perhaloalkyl group having the number of carbon atoms 1 to 8. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound suitable for a light-absorbing agent for an optical filter, and to provide an optical filter comprising the compound. SOLUTION: The cyanine compound represented by formula (I) is useful as a light-absorbing agent for a light having a wavelength of 750-1,100 nm, particularly 800-900 nm. The cyanine compound is excellent in light fastness and also excellent in heat resistance and moist heat resistance. The optical filter comprising the compound is suitably employed for enhancement of display qualities of an image display device, prevention of reflection of external light and prevention of erroneous operation of an infrared remote control.
