Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an electroviscous fluid excellent in homogeneity, durability, and electroviscous effect by blending a thermotropic liquid-crystal polymer compound with a thermotropic liquid-crystal low-mol. compound. CONSTITUTION:A thermotropic liquid-crystal polymer compound, e.g. one represented by formula I (wherein R is H or methyl, p is 2-12, and n is the degree of polymerization) is blended with a thermotropic liquid-crystal low-mol. compound, e.g. one represented by formula II (wherein k is 0 or 1 and m is 4-12) in a molar ratio of generally 5:5 to 9:1 to obtain the electroviscous fluid. This fluid has a liquid-crystal/isotropic phase transition temp. (a), and is not electroviscous at temps. not lower than the temp. (a). Therefore, viscosity control is possible not only with an electric field but by changing temp.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain such a polymer gel system free from diffusion without causing by-reaction which consumes energy such as electrolysis of water and to improve responsibility for the electric field applied, by using a liquid crystal elastomer as a gellating material having compatibility with a low mol.wt. liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:This compsn. consists of a low mol.wt. liquid crystal material 3 and a liquid crystal elastomer 1 swollen with the low mol.wt. liquid crystal material 3. The liquid crystal elastomer 1 used has both properties of liquid crystal and rubber and is obtd. by polymn. of a polymerizable low mol.wt. liquid crystal material in the presence of a crosslinking agent. Before voltage is applied, the liquid crystal elastomer 1 is swollen in the low mol.wt. liquid crystal material having orientation of molecules shown in the figure (a). When voltage is applied under a condition of the mesogen 2 of the liquid crystal elastomer and dielectric anisotropy of the low mol.wt. liquid crystal molecules 3 positive, the compsn. is oriented as shown in the figure (b) in such a manner that the direction of the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules is parallel to the electric field.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an automatic hot and cold water selector valve having a simple structure and requiring no drive power by applying the constitution where a valve member is formed with heat reversible expansion and contraction material for employing the expanding and contracting behavior of a valve itself, and hot water or cold water is thereby selected automatically. CONSTITUTION:The inside of a hollow box type main body 1 is divided into a feed water chamber 2 at a lower level and a hot water chamber 3 and a cold water chamber 4 at an upper level. The chambers 2 to 4 are respectively fitted with pipe lines 2a to 4a for communication with the outside. By introducing cold water from the pipe line 2a to the feed water chamber 2, each of valve members 3d and 4d is caused to expand, and a through-hole 3b is thereby closed, while another through-hole 4b is opened, thereby introducing cold water from the chamber 2 only to the cold water chamber 4 and discharging the water outside through the pile line 4a. On the other hand, each of the members 3d and 4d is caused to contract by introducing hot water to the feed water chamber 2 and the hole 3b is thereby opened, while the hole 4d is closed, thereby introducing hot water from the chamber 2 only to the hot water chamber 3 and discharging the water outside through the pipe line 3a.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic method of an amino acid acryloyl monomer or an amino acid methacryloyl monomer that can protect an optically active site sufficiently exhibiting the properties of amino acid by formation of a copper complex and can permit inexpensive and safe acryloylation or meth-acryloylation and can be resinified through radical polymerization as in the same way in the syntheses of polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, or the like. SOLUTION: Copper ion is added to an amino acid to form a copper complex at room temperature, then the substitution reaction with an acid chloride is carried out in an aqueous mixed solvent to form an amino acid acryloyl-copper complex or metharyloyl-copper complex, then the copper is removed from the organic solvent phase with a chelating agent at room temperature in a neutral region. The resultant amino acid acryloyl monomer or amino acid methacryloyl monomer is radically polymerized to synthesize a telomer or a polymer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound usable for copolymerization of a high molecular weight compound having an usage such as heat-sensitively responsible polymer by carrying out protection of the hydrogen atom of the amino group bonding to the α-carbon of an amino acid and the hydroxy group of the carboxyl group with a protecting group. SOLUTION: This compound is the one of formula I (Z is a protecting group of H of amino group; Y is the protecting group of hydroxy group of carboxyl group), e.g. a compound of formula II (Z is formula III; Bz1 is formula IV). The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by dissolving a compound of formula V [Boc is (CH3 )3 COCO], dimethylaminopyridine and benzyl alcohol in methylene chloride, adding a water-soluble carbodiimide-hydrochloride to the methylene chloride solution to react, dropping 4N hydrochloric acid/ethyl acetate solution to the compound obtained by the reaction, dissolving the obtained product and triethylamine in tetrahydrofuran and, by adding acryloyl chloride to the tetrahydrofuran solution to react with the dissolved compound to provide the objective compound of formula II.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject copolymer that has further higher transition point and can manifest the functions of recognition of amino acids and optical resolution by copolymerizing a monomer bearing an amino acid residue on its side chain and an N-isopropylacrylamide. SOLUTION: This copolymer is represented by formula I ((m), (n) are each the proportion in weight% of individual components in the copolymer) and is obtained by copolymerizing a compound of formula II (Z is a protecting group for H atom in an amino group; Y is a protecting group for hydroxyl in a carboxyl group, for example, benzyl and the like; protecting group Z is benzyloxycarbonyl, t-butoxy-carbonyl) with N-isopropylacrylamide followed by deprotection of the protecting groups Z and Y. This copolymer is dissolved in water at a lower temperature than the transition point, but causes a phase separation above the transition point and the aqueous solution becomes cloudy, thus it can be expectedly used as a thermally responding polymer. In addition, the copolymer can also be used as a reagent for discrimination of kinds of amino acids and for resolution of amino acids.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heat-sensitive body using a polymer gel, in which the density of a network structure composed of a lyotropic liquid crystal polymer is controlled, and to provide a method for manufacturing the heat-sensitive body. SOLUTION: A polymer exhibiting lyotropic liquid crystal property is dissolved in a monomer mixture of an N-substituted acrylamide derivative and/or an N-substituted methacrylamide derivative, for example, N-isopropylacrylamide, or the like, and a bifunctional monomer, and optionally a solvent to form a liquid crystal structure. Subsequently, the resultant solution is subjected to polymerization, and the formed lyotropic liquid crystal polymer is removed. The objective heat-sensitive body is obtained by using the thus-obtained polymer gel compound.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic method of an amino acid acryloyl monomer or amino acid methacryloyl monomer and its telomer or polymer wherein an optically active site which sufficiently expresses property of an amino acid is protected by formation of a copper complex, acryloylation or methacryloylation can be also performed inexpensively and safely in water, and they can be resinified by a radical polymerization method similarly to a synthetic method of polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene. SOLUTION: After forming a copper complex at room temperature by adding a copper ion to an amino acid, an amino acid acryloyl-copper complex or methacryloyl-copper complex is produced by a substituting reaction of acid chloride in aqueous mixed solvents, and the copper is extracted from the organic layer with a chelating agent at room temperature and at a neutral region to be removed. Further, the telomer or polymer is synthesized by radically polymerizing the obtained amino acid acryloyl monomer or amino acid methacryloyl monomer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a copolymer having thermal responsibility, amino acid-identifying ability and ability for carrying out optical resolution of isomers, as an aqueous solution, and having excellent activities as a thermal responsive polymer, an agent for identifying an amino acid, and a reagent for optical resolution of isomers. SOLUTION: This copolymer is represented by formula I [(m) is 50-95 mol.%, (n) is 5-50 mol.%]. The copolymer is obtained by copolymerizing a compound of formula II (Z is a protective group of an amino group; Y is a protective group of OH of carboxy group) with N-n-propylacrylamide(NnPAAm), and deprotecting the protective groups Z and Y of the copolymerized product. The solution of the copolymer is utilized as a thermal responsive polymer, because the aqueous solution of the copolymer dissolved in water at the temperature not higher than the transition temperature causes phase separation at the temperature not lower than the transition temperature, and becomes insoluble in the water and opaque. The thermal responsive polymer is a polymer changing the solubility in the water at 0-100 deg.C and manifesting a behavior reversely becoming soluble and insoluble.
