Abstract: Methanol and/or dimethyl ether is converted into lower olefins by bringing a gas stream containing methanol and/or dimethyl ether into contact with a catalyst which contains an aluminosilicate or gallosilicate containing a divalent metal and which has been obtained by hydrothermal treatment of a solution containing a source of metal oxides using a monohydric alcohol having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms as crystallisation aid.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a lower olefin in high efficiency from methanol and/or dimethyl ether by catalytic reaction using a reaction tube made of a metal, by sulfiding the inner wall of the reaction tube in advance or by mixing a sulfide to the raw material. CONSTITUTION:A lower olefin (e.g. propylene) is produced from methanol or dimethyl ether by catalytic reaction using a reaction tube made of a metal (preferably stainless steel). The decomposition and coking of the raw material in the reaction tube can be suppressed and the lower olefin can be stably produced in high yield over a long period by sulfiding the inner wall of the reaction tube in advance or by mixing a sulfide (e.g. CS2 or dimethyl sulfide) into the raw material or combining the above two methods. The sulfidation of the inner wall of the reaction tube is carried out by using CS2, H2S, dimethyl sulfide, etc., at 500-600 deg.C for 1-50hr. The reaction is carried out at >=450 deg.C (especially 500-600 deg.C) preferably in the presence of a high-temperature-type catalyst.
