Abstract: Process for the production of a C/C composite comprising a carbon matrix and carbon fibres and exhibiting a difference in crystalline structures of the carbon matrix between (a) the part situated at the interface and in the vicinity of the interface between the carbon fibres and the carbon matrix and (b) the remainder of the carbon matrix. This C/C composite exhibits excellent mechanical strength and thermal conductivity properties. The process for the production of this C/C composite comprises the insertion of a carbonisation catalyst into the carbon fibres, the impregnation of these carbon fibres containing the carbonisation catalyst inserted therein, with a precursor of the carbon matrix, and calcination of the impregnation product.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To mold carbon powder including no volatile component into the desired shape without using a bonding material by feeding the carbon powder including no volatile content into a mold and retaining the same in a high-frequency induction oven or a graphite electric resistance oven for a given time under the given atmosphere, load and temperature. CONSTITUTION:Carbon powder prepared by coking coal or petroleum pitch, removing completely the volatile content to a substantial extent and pulverized carbon powder is fed into a proper molding tool and is set in a high-frequency induction oven. Then, a reaction device is vacuumized or turned into inactive gas atmosphere. 100-5000kg/cm load is applied from above the molding tool. After that, the temperature in the device is raised up to 1700-3000 deg.C. Also the retaining time for heat treatment is different for different sintering temperature, and usually is in the range of 1-100 minutes. A carbon product can be molded easily and at low cost by using an easily available raw material without requiring a special device.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the graphite multiple intercalation compd. having high conductivity in a short reaction time by allowing graphite to react with a metal chloride in a sealed tube and anodizing the obtained intercalation compd. in perchloric acid with the compd. as a working electrode and platinum as the counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:Graphite is allowed to react with a metal chloride in an evacuated sealed tube to form an (n)th-stage graphite intercalation compd. (n=2, 3). The compd. is then anodized in perchloric acid with the compd. as a working electrode and platinum as the counter electrode to intercalate the perchloric acid into the void between the graphite layers, and the desired graphite multiple intercalation compd. is obtained. The compd. is shown by the formula (x is 7-9 and y is 0.8-1.2 when z=1). The chlorides of transition metals such as iron chloride, aluminum chloride and bismuth chloride are used as the metal chloride. Bismuth chloride is most preferably used.

After unsaturated hydrocarbon is introduced into the gap between the graphite layers of the alkali metal-graphite interlaminar compd. to be polymerized, the obtained graphite-polymer composite is heat-treated to produce a graphite material.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a high strength three-dimensional fabric C-C composite capable of freely controlling the direction of heat conductivity by impregnating a carbon source into a three-dimensional fabric of carbon fibers having anisotropic heat conductivity as a reinforcing material and burning the carbon source. CONSTITUTION:A three-dimensional fabric of carbon fibers having arbitrary anisotropic heat conductivity is formed by using carbon fibers made from polyacrylonitrile, pitch, etc., and changing the constitution, orientation ratio and content. A carbon source is impregnated into the fabric, carbonized and graphitized by burning. Pitch, gaseous hydrocarbon or phenol resin may be used as the carbon source. The graphitizing temp. is properly selected within the range of about 1,200-3,000 deg.C. A C-C composite having superior mechanical strength and capable of freely controlling the direction of heat conductivity is obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain C/C composite having excellent bonding properties of carbon fiber and matrix at the interface and more excellent properties such as mechanical properties or thermal conductivity in comparison with the conventional products by bringing carbon fiber subjected to intercalation of a carbonizing catalyst into contact with a raw material of carbon matrix and burning. CONSTITUTION:A C/C composite having properties such as strength or thermal conductivity corresponding to the required conditions is obtained by using carbon fibers having different species of carbonizing catalyst and/or amount of intercalation. Namely, at least a species of carbonizing catalyst is previously subjected to intercalation with a carbon fiber and said carbon fiber is used as a reinforcing material and impregnated with carbon source as a matrix, then resultant system is burned. Besides, e.g. coal tar pitch-based carbon fiber is exemplified as the carbon fiber. Further, chemical species having catalytic function to carbonizing reaction, e.g. AlCl3 is used as the carbonizing catalyst. Furthermore, the amount of intercalation of the carbonizing catalyst is preferably in the range of 0.5-10wt.% to the carbon fiber, as usual.
