    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a function of an electro spray device disposed so that a spray needle and an ion extraction interface become orthogonal to each other.
    SOLUTION: An interface axis 122 is disposed in a relationship so as to cross a spray nozzle axis 124, an angle defined between the nozzle axis 124 and the interface axis 122 are set from around 75 ° and around 105 °. An interface 106 is possible to operate to accept a voltage from an interface power source, and an auxiliary electrode 140 can operate for accepting a voltage from an auxiliary power source. The electrode 140 can operate, to regulate electric field at an outlet orifice and disposed in a relationship possible to operate against the orifice. The electro spray device can operate to define an ion passage, through which ions on their ways from the orifice to an inlet are passed and the electrode 140 is disposed outside the ion passage.

    Abstract: Electrospray apparatus, includes: a nozzle providing an exit orifice (130), an entrance orifice, and a passage (126) extending from the entrance orifice to the exit orifice (130), the nozzle defining a nozzle axis (124); an interface providing an inlet (112), an outlet, and a passage extending from the inlet to the outlet, the interface providing an interface axis(122); the interface disposed such that the inlet (112) is adjacent the exit orifice (130) and the interface axis (122) is in transverse relation to the nozzle axis (124); wherein an angle formed between the nozzle axis (124) and the interface axis (122) is between about 75 degrees and about 105 degrees, the interface operable to receive a voltage from an interface voltage source; an auxiliary electrode (140) operable to receive a voltage from an auxiliary voltage source (132), and to modulate an electric field at the exit orifice (130), the electrospray apparatus being operable to define an ion pathway followed by ions enroute from the exit orifice to the inlet, the auxiliary electrode (140) being disposed outside the ion pathway. The auxiliary electrode (140) may be a disk electrode, a pin electrode or an L-shaped electrode. A lumen (110) may supply a counterflow of drying gas (136).
