Abstract:
A user equipment (UE) device may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and/or additional optimization requirements. The UE device may communicate with a cellular base station according to a first mode of operation associated with the new device category, and may switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a second mode of operation associated with a second (pre-existing) device category in response to the link budget requirements exceeding a specified value and the quality of service requirements not being sensitive. The UE device may also switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a third mode of operation associated with a third (pre-existing) device type in response to the link budget requirement not exceeding the specified value, or the QoS requirements being sensitive and a downlink throughput requirement exceeding a specified throughput value.
Abstract:
A client device and a host device may create a local connection for providing wide area network access, such as Internet access, to the client device. In some embodiments, the client device may have limited network capabilities and may not be able to access the Internet without the host device. The client device may provide its speed and direction in a message to potential host devices. A host device may calculate a suitability metric, based on the speed and direction of the client as well as connection properties of the networks, which indicates an ability for the host device to connect the client device to the Internet. The host device may provide the suitablity metric within a connection reqeust to the client device. Based on the suitabiltiy metric and/or other factors, the client device and the host device may establish the local connection.
Abstract:
For paging user devices that are link budget limited (LBL), a base station transmits a special ID that is used by said devices to identify a paging frame and/or a paging occasion. When transmitting a paging message for an LBL device, the base station may use: (a) larger aggregation and larger CFI (than conventionally allowed) and (b) a larger number of resource blocks (than conventionally allowed) for paging payload. If paging messages for LBL devices saturate the paging frame capacity, the base station may allocate a plurality of special IDs. If paging messages for LBL devices and/or other data transfers saturate network capacity, at least a subset of the LBL devices may be directed to enter a connected-state discontinuous reception (DRX) mode, wherein those devices will remain in connected mode and periodically check for resource allocations. Paging payload information may be repeatedly transmitted in successive subframes, to support soft combining.
Abstract:
This disclosure relates to techniques for transmitting and receiving control information in the common search space on an enhanced physical downlink control channel (EPDCCH). According to some embodiments, a cellular base station may allocate some resource blocks of a subframe as the EPDCCH. The cellular base station may provide control information on a common search space in the EPDCCH for wireless user equipment (UE) devices in the cell provided by the cellular base station during a subframe. A UE device may monitor the EPDCCH to determine whether any indication on the common search space decodable by the UE device is contained in the EPDCCH, and may decode such information if present.
Abstract:
Mechanisms are disclosed for improved transmission of uplink control information by a user equipment (UE) that is link budget limited. In one embodiment, the UE transmits a message to the base station indicating that the UE is link budget limited. In response to the message, the base station sends an uplink grant to the UE, enabling the UE to transmit uplink control information on the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) instead of on the Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH). In another embodiment, the base station sends an uplink grant to a link-budget-limited UE each time downlink traffic is transmitted to the UE, enabling the UE to send ACK/NACK feedback on the PUSCH instead of the PUCCH. In another embodiment, the UE transmits a scheduling request (SR) to the base station as part of a random access procedure, enabling the SR to be transmitted on the PUSCH instead of the PUCCH.
Abstract:
Enhanced random access procedures for link-budget-limited user equipment (UE) devices are disclosed. A user equipment device may transmit a first message containing a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH). The PRACH contains instances of a Zadoff-Chu sequence, and may be transmitted repeatedly as part of a single random attempt, to facilitate correlation data combining at the base station. The available Zadoff-Chu sequences may be partitioned among a plurality of sets, each set being associated with a respective Doppler shift range (or frequency hop pattern or time repetition pattern). A UE device may signal Doppler shift (or other information) to the base station by selection of one of the sets. The first PRACH transmission and the following PRACH transmission may occur in consecutive subframes. A UE device may select from a special set of Zadoff-Chu sequences (different from a conventional set of sequences), to signal its status as a link-budget-limited device.
Abstract:
Mechanisms for operating a wireless user equipment device, to determine the state of data scheduling activity. Such activity state (and other information such as measurements of signal interference and/or channel condition) may be used to dynamically control the selection of a high-power high-performance receiver vs. a low-power basic receiver. A first mechanism involves transitioning to a high activity state and starting a timer upon each occurrence of scheduled subframe. A transition to the low activity state occurs whenever the timer expires. A second mechanism involves filtering a sequence of binary-valued indicators corresponding respectively to a sequence of time intervals. Each indicator indicates whether a subframe is scheduled during the corresponding time interval. The filter output is compared to a threshold to determine high/low activity state. The temporal width of the filter impulse response may be increased to support fast initial response without harming the accuracy of activity-state determination in the steady state.
Abstract:
A host device may include a first wireless communication circuit, a second wireless communication circuit including a proxy router, and a host processor communicatively coupled to the wireless communication circuits. The host device may receive, via the second wireless communication circuit, an advertisement message from a client device. The advertisement message may include a request for communication of data with a network. The host device may determine at least one of a communication policy preference of the host device and a network connection property of the host device. The proxy router may select the first or the second wireless communication circuit for use by the host device to communicate the data with the network. The host device may provide, via the second wireless communication circuit, a connection request to the client device, and then transfer, using the selected wireless communication circuit, the data between the client device and the network.
Abstract:
Embodiments relate to apparatus, systems, and methods for reception of calls on a mobile device that includes Wi-Fi and cellular radios. The mobile device may be configured to establish communication on a Wi-Fi network with a cellular carrier. The mobile device may further be configured to register a first IP address with an IMS server for the Wi-Fi network communication and register a second IP address with the IMS server for the cellular network communication (or register different ports of a single IP address with Wi-Fi and cellular). Upon occurrence of a mobile terminating call from the cellular carrier, the mobile device may receive an incoming call notification on one or both of the Wi-Fi network using the first IP address and the cellular network using the second IP address.
Abstract:
Manipulating modulation and coding scheme (MCS) allocation after a communication interruption. A UE device may resume communications with a BS after a communication interruption. First channel quality information may be generated and transmitted to the BS. A first MCS allocation, which may be based at least in part on the first channel quality information, may be received from the BS. Second channel quality information may be generated and transmitted to the BS, where the second channel quality information is modified by an offset configured to modify a second MCS allocation.
