    Abstract: A relatively thin sheet is mounted between the door and the housing defining elongated corrugations spanning the open mouth of the housing and crushable against the edges of the housing to absorb energy and protect an occupant upon impact with the door. The corrugations are parallel and the sheet is attached to the door along attachment regions intermediate the corrugations. The corrugations are triangular in cross section. The door comprises a sheet metal substrate forming a rear surface facing the housing and a decorative surface forming a portion of the instrument panel and where the corrugated sheet is attached to the substrate.

    Abstract: The air bag module door comprises a face portion to provide closure to an opening in an interior trim structure of a vehicle through which an air bag is deployable, the face portion having an upper surface, a lower surface and a peripheral surface between the upper and lower surfaces. The module door has at least a portion of the peripheral surface supported by an underlying portion of the interior trim structure, and at least one first flexible leg joined at a first end to the face portion and joinable at a second end to a corresponding mounting section of the module unit. The flexible leg permits the face portion to be positioned about the air bag deployment opening as the module unit is secured to the vehicle. The flexible leg becomes tensioned as the module door is fixed in position relative to the air bag deployment opening.

    Abstract: The device includes a number of slotted channels extending rearwardly from back of the releasable door and which are open through a slot through an outer extremity and at each end. There is a mounting substrate in the instrument panel having holes in it. There are H-rib fastening members each having an H-shaped head which is adapted to be inserted and slipped into either end of one of the channels in the door for the positioning and releasable retention of the fastening members in the door. Each of the H-rib fastening members has a mounting shank extending downwardly from the H-shaped head and adapted to extend through the slot in an outer extremity of the channel and to fit in a hole in the mounting substrate. There is a resilient clip mounted on the mounting shank of the H-rib fastening member for insertion into one of the holes in the mounting substrate for locking the H-rib fastening member in place in the mounting substrate. Inflation of the airbag causes the H-rib head to release from the channel, thereby freeing the door from engagement with the H-rib fastening member to thereby enable the door to be released from the instrument panel.
