Abstract: The air-bag comprises a front panel, a rear panel and an inner panel interposed between the front and rear panels. Each panel has an outer peripheral edge, all of the panels being of fabric joined together along a non-rupturable outer seam at their outer peripheral edges to define an air-bag with the front and rear panels being the outer walls of the air-bag and with the inner panel inside the air-bag. A central opening in the rear panel provides a mouth of the air-bag for receiving inflation gas. A central opening in the inner panel is at least as large as the opening in the rear panel. The inner panel is additionally joined to the front panel along an inner seam around the central opening on the inner panel and joined to the rear panel by a non-rupturable middle seam located between the inner seam and outer seam on the inner panel. A flap comprises an area on the inner panel between the inner seam and middle seam. The flap has an inner edge comprising the inner seam. An outer edge comprises the middle seam. A gas exhaust on the rear panel is between the middle seam and the mouth of the air-bag.

Abstract: A vehicle occupant inflatable air bag restraint and a method of inflating such an air bag. The air bag has a face panel, a rear panel (12) and two internal hinged flaps (24, 26) all of impermeable material. The rear panel (12) has two large vents (18, 20) internally covered with screen material (22). A first end of each flap (24, 26) and one end of a tether are sewn (32) to the base panel (12) adjacent an inflation gas inlet (16) thereof. The second end of each flap (24, 26) is detachably sewn to an intermediate position of the tether and the other end of the tether is sewn to the face panel. Only if full deployment occurs will the flaps become detached from the tether and block the vents (18, 20) except for small areas defined by holes (28) in the flaps. Incomplete deployment results in the full area of the vents (18, 20) being available for air bag venting.

Abstract: The inflator comprises an upper stamped metal housing part (24) welded (36) to a lower stamped metal housing part (26) which includes an integral centre tie (22) containing a metal cup (42) accommodating gas generant material (70) and an igniter assembly (43) including a squib (64). Initiation of the generant material (70) causes an upper piston portion of the cup (42) to separate from the rest of the cup at a circumferential groove (52) and move upwardly uncovering openings (55) which allows hot gas to pass outwardly into a surrounding toroidal chamber (20) accommodating pressurised gas from where gas passes inwardly through further openings (58) into the centre tie (22) above the cup (42) and then out of the inflator through a frangibly sealed orifice (40). Upward movement of the piston portion is arrested by friction and inwardly directed tabs (60).
